Chiranjeevi claims he is greater than NTR

Drawing a parallel between the legendary Telugu film actor, N.T. Rama Rao and himself, the Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi on Monday claimed that he had more clout among the people than NTR.

Even though the PR failed to create departments in the party’s state committee due to non-availability of suitable leaders, Chiranjeevi claimed that he broke NTR’s record in constituting party committees.

“NTR set up party committees only after he came to power. We have done it before the elections. Leaders in our party are vying with each other for party posts as they are enthusiastic to serve the people. It indicates that the PR has more clout among the people,” Chiranjeevi said while addressing the PR district committees’ convention at the Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad on Monday. Chiranjeevi asked his cadre to constitute booth level committees and village level committees as it is crucial to transform public response into votes in the ensuing elections.

However, the PR chief failed to clarify queries posed by party leaders on how the PR will bring about change and how it will be different from other parties. He also did not clarify how the PR will uplfit the downtrodden.

Yuva Rajyam president Pavan Kalyan is of the view that the tremendous success of his brother Chiranjeevi’s public meetings is creating jitters in other political parties, particularly, the Telugu Desam.

Referring to TD leaders’ criticism that PRP is like a bubble ready to burst, Pavan Kalyan said such comments itself indicate that the TD is in a panicky mood. “If PRP is a bubble, there is no need for TD to talk about it at all. The very fact that they are making comments on us shows how much worried they are about growing popularity of PRP,” he said.

He refutied the criticism that PRP was dominated by only Chiranjeevi’s family members. “Don’t worry. I am not going to contest polls, but will work as an ordinary soldier,” he said.

Chiru ditches Jaya Prada

The Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Prada is quite close to the Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi. She also holds him in high esteem and has made several statements assuring of her full support.

Jaya Prada who is the in charge of the Samajwadi Party in Andhra Pradesh also announced that she was ready to campaign for Chiranjeevi. All this naturally led people to believe that the Samajwadi Party was inching towards some sort of a tie-up with the PRP for the coming elections.

Speaking at the prajaankita yatra here at Nellore; Praja Rajyam party president Chiranjeevi said that the current Congress Government was acting like a drunkard and was only bothered about pleasing themselves and filling money in their banks. He further said that like a drunk father treats his family; the government wasn’t bothered by the people’s plight.

On the third day of his tour to Nellore district, he visited Koovuuruu, Buchhi, Aatmakuru, kavali and Vinjamuuru. At the meetings Chiranjeevi also referred to the failure of cloud seeding and said that the Government was trying to make money from natural resources.

Chiranjeevi referred to the frequent battles of current politicians in the assembly, where they claim how corrupt each other is, he said it looks like politicians are no more guilty of eating into public money. He requested the people to vote PRP into power and said that his party was focused on cleansing the government system of corruption.

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi will be starting his tour of Prakasam District today. Huge crowds are expected at the four day long tour, which is dotted with several public meetings.

It is also expected that Chiranjeevi will meet fishermen from Chirala, and then analyze the situation of craftsmen by talking to them also.

The four day long visit will include 12 public meetings, and the first one would be at Singaraya Konda. Police personnel have been working hard to provide proper security and other arrangements as huge crowds are expected at the public meetings.

In a sharp response to Congressmen burning his effigy and their ‘Gandhigiri’ at the Praja Rajyam Party office here on Wednesday, president of its youth wing Pawan Kalyan said he was ready to take on any Congressman.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the ‘Yuva Rajyam’ president referred to Congress leaders across the State reacting to his comments against them, made on Tuesday by saying he would pay the price.

In a rhetoric, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said he had told his family members that in assisting his brother and Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi in his endeavour, he was even ready for the ‘supreme sacrifice’.

“When Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy heaped criticism on the Praja Rajyam calling it a party that operated more like a movie production house, we did not attack Gandhi Bhavan or go to Dr. Reddy’s house in protest,” he said.

He said it was not as if either himself or the Praja Rajyam cadres were incapable of physically re-buffing criticism against them or even using harsh language while doing so.

“We are only abiding by our president Mr. Chiranjeevi’s principle that we shall be respectful even while criticising others in a democracy and refrain from personalised attacks,” he said

The angry young legislator, Vangaveeti Radha Krishna, who switched over to Praja Rajyam Party, is set to quit Assembly in the next couple of days.

Initially, he refused to quit Assembly as its term ends in just three months. However, the PRP leaders have reportedly prevailed upon him to quit the Assembly before taking up new assignment in the party. Accordingly, he had agreed to quit and send his resignation letter in the next couple of days. He had already surrendered his gun man provided by the government.

Meanwhile, sources said that the PRP is planning to make him the Yuva Rajyam incharge for the coastal districts, where his father, Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, has good following. He is being tipped for this post to assist Pawan Kalyan in rallying youth for the party.

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi appears to have failed in convincing the people as to why they should elect his party to power in the next elections.

His mantra is “change.” But what is that change? Chiranjeevi is not able to explain to the people what change he would bring about in the lives of the people if he comes to power. But, he wants the people to bring a change in the ruling party. “Why do you always choose between only the Congress and Telugu Desam? Political analysts say this argument will not go down well with the people. They do not want change of political parties in power for the sake of change. They want a change in the governance. Stating that Jeevitha has hurt their feeling with her comments that the blood banks are doing business at the expense of the commoners, the members said they won’t keep quiet till the actor’s wife apologises to the lakhs of Chiranjeevi fans. They said they would release a white paper on the blood supplied to the needy people by the Chiranjeevi blood banks. “If our blood banks are doing business, then how did the government give the best blood bank award to the Chiranjeevi blood bank,” one of the members said.

New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS) South Indian film star-turned-politician Chiranjeevi Monday ruled out an alliance between his newly formed political outfit Praja Rajyam and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his home state Andhra Pradesh for the coming Lok Sabha elections.”We are ready to form an alliance with all secular parties,” Chiranjeevi told reporters after his meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami here.

“Praja Rajyam is a secular party while the BJP is not and there could not be any truck with it,” he said.

He also said a final decision on the poll alliance was yet to be taken.

The South Indian matinee idol said he requested the Election Commission to allot a symbol to his party though, according to the rules, the poll panel does not provide a common symbol to the candidates of a new party contesting the polls for the first time.

Without a common symbol, each candidate will have to contest on his/her own separate symbol.

“A single symbol is very important for the party’s identity and we have discussed the matter with Gopalaswami,” Chiranjeevi said.

Megastar and Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi is in a deep confusion now. After having made a desperate bid to convince the Election Commisison authorities for a common election symbol for his party in the elections, he now wonders how he should go about in the next elections.

Chiranjeevi, however, put up a brave front before the media. “I have not insisted on rising sun symbol. But, we wanted a common symbol.

Never mind, even if we don’t get it. Chiranjeevi himself is a symbol and it is enough for us to get 225 seats in the next elections,” he said.

According to EC rules, only those parties which get at least 10 per cent of the total votes polled only get recognition from the EC and they would get a common symbol in the subsequent elections. Even in the past, NTR (TD) did not get any official symbol because it failed to get required number of votes. Chiranjeevi might find it difficult to get votes, if his candidates fight with different symbols in different constituencies.

Having completed his Medak district visit Chiuranjeevi will be starting his tour of Ranga Reddy district from today i.e. 26th of December, 2008. This will continue or three days in Ranga Reddy district.

Starting off would be his 4pm public gathering at Ramya Grounds in Kukatpally , Chiranjeevi would follow it up with a 6 clock address at Qutubullapur Munciapla grounds.

Radha’s Men Beat up Ranga’s Loyalists

Vijayawada: The city boiled once again on Friday, after more than two decades, as MLA Vangaveeti Radhakrishna’s men beat up the Congress leaders and followers of slain Congress MLA, Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga Rao, on his death anniversary.

Radhakrishna’s men chased the Congress leaders, including senior Congress leader and Ranga’s loyalist Malladi Vishnu. They also beat up the supporters of Vishnu and hurled soda bottles at them injuring one person. The melee had spread to the busy Besant Road, where the traders have downed the shutters fearing riot. The Governorpet area is in tension now as the police arrested Congress leaders, include Vishnu, the party floor leader in Municipal Corporation, Kunuku Raja Sekhar and a few others.

Radhakrishna, a Congress MLA from Vijayawada East, switched over his loyalties to the Praja Rajyam Party last week and challenged the Congress men to observe his father’s death anniversary. The angry young MLA garlanded the statue of Ranga on M G Road and went on to Krishna Lanka area to participate in several prorgammes organized on the occasion.

A few minutes later Vishnu, senior Congress leaders, Kolanukonda Sivaji, Adapa Nagendra and Badita Shankar, reached the venue and garlanded the statue. They also tied the Congress’ tricolour cloth around Ranga.

Ranga’s widow and former MLA, Rathna Kumari, who was watching the Congress men garlanding her husband’s statue alerted her son, Radhakrishna, who rushed to the spot along with his supporters. Both Rathnakumari and Radhakrishna removed the Congress cloth and chased the Congressmen. The angry PRP workers also hurled sticks at the vehicles of the Congress leaders as both Radhakrishna and Rathnakumari hurled abuses at the Congress leaders.

The Radhakrishna’s supporters chased the Congress workers in the lanes of Besant Road hurling soda bottles. In the melee, a Youth Congress worker, Koppisetti Durga Rao, received bleeding injuries.

Recovering from the shock, the Congress leaders held a protest at Besant Road, who were immediately removed by the police. The police provided security in the entire Governorpet area to prevent untoward incidents.

The irony is that it was Malladi Vishnu who installed the bronze statue of Ranga, when Rathnakumari and Radhakrishna did not take interest in that. In fact, Vishnu had been rallying a good number of Ranga’s followers and had saved several of Ranga’s loyalists from the TD’s onslaught in 1990s.

Two More Congress MLAs To Join Praja Rajyam

Two more legislators from Krishna district are likely to join the Praja Rajyam in the days to come. The Praja Rajyam already has one MLA, Vangaveeti Radhakrishna, from Krishna district.

Senior legislator, Buragadda Vedavyas, from Malleswaram segment is gearing up to jump into the Mega force. Though, he denied the reports, it is said that he had already assured Chiranjeevi of his entry three months ago. Even today, he is in regular contact with the Megastar. In fact, he was initially scheduled to join the party along with P Sivashankar, but due to some reasons this was deferred.

Vedavyas is said to be moving into PRP for two reasons – the community loyalty and his differences with Congress MLA from Machilipatnam, Perni Nani. The Malleswaram segment disappeared in the delimitation and he is to contest either from Pedana or from Machilipatnam. Vedavyas is interested in contesting from Machilipatnam, which Perni Nani is now representing.

The other MLA to join PRP is K Paradha Sarathi from Vuyyuru. Saradhi’s father and former MP, K P Reddayya, has already joined the PRP and is trying his best to contest from Machilipatnam Lok Sabha Constituency. Sarathi had lost his Vuyyuru segment in the delimitation and he has to contest from Penamaluru, which is part of the erstwhile Kankipadu segment represented by Devineni Rajasekhar Nehru.

According to the informed sources, both Vedavyas and Sarathi are likely to join the party on the same day, some time in January 2009.

Chiranjeevi to tour Medak

SANGAREDDY: The three-day visit of Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi would commence from December 22 in Medak district.

This would be his second visit to the district. The actor turned politician had community lunch at SIngannagudem during his first leg of the tour in the district.

Beginning at BHEL at 1 p.m. on December 22, he would be addressing four meetings at Patancheru, Sangareddy and Zaheerabad. Night stay would be at Zaheerabad followed by a press conference the following day and a visit to the Vinayaka temple at Rechintal.

Public meetings
On December 23, Chiranjeevi will address public meetings at Narayanakhed, Jogipet, Medak and Narasapur. He will leave for Hyderabad the same day and begin his next day visit from Gajwel and cover Siddipet and Dubbaka. Though PR is confident of pulling crowds to the meetings , the question is how strong it would be at areas like Siddipet , the strong hold of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the home town of its president K. Chandrasekhara Rao. “Our success in the region will depend on how best we can present ourselves in Siddipet. If we are able to do that, it is sure that we will cross one of the major hurdles and create confidence among the people in Telangana region,” said a Praja Rajyam party leader.

The Congress MLA of Vijayawada (East) Vangaveeti Radhakrishna on Sunday resigned from the party and joined the Praja Rajyam in the presence of its president Chiranjeevi.

Mr. Radhakrishna trained his guns on another Congress MLA from Krishna district Devineni Rajasekhar while announcing his decision to join the Praja Rajyam at its office here.

He told mediapersons that the Congress leadership is biased towards a few individuals to whom it grants benefits. Mr. Rajasekhar is also among them, he alleged.

Incidentally, the bitter rivalry between Mr. Radhakrishna and Mr. Rajasekhar spilled over on the floor of Assembly earlier this year.

A land dispute between them triggered an angry outburst from Mr. Radhakrishna in the House.

Youngest legislator

Son of former Congress MLA Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga who was hacked to death by his political rivals in Vijayawada in 1988, Mr. Radhakrishna was the youngest legislator to be elected to the present term of Assembly in 2004.

He said he endured pain even as the Congress took decisions that went against him. The Congress leadership overlooked him though his father made supreme sacrifice for the party, he said.

Chiranjeevi said the entry of Mr. Radhakrishna into Praja Rajyam reflects the growing popularity of the party after its youth wing – Yuva Rajyam – was activated.

Close relationship

He added that he was closely associated with Mohana Ranga until the latter’s death. Ranga used to watch his film shootings at locations as far as Jammu and Kashmir and often praised his hard work that helped him make a career in films on his own, Chiranjeevi added.

He also said Ranga advised him to enter politics at a stage when he had not even turned his attention to it.

The bond between his and Ranga’s family is once again built with Mr. Radhakrishna joining the party, he said.

Botcha reacts

Meanwhile, Housing Minister Botcha Satyanarayana said Mr. Radhakrishna could have resigned out of insecurity of not getting party ticket to contest the next Assembly elections.

“Merely because a person quits the Congress does not mean that the party’s vote bank will erode. We may lose one vote or gain 1,000 votes because of the departure of some leaders,” the Minister remarked.

Power star Pavan Kalyan has been appointed as the chief of “Yuva Rajyam” the youth wing of Praja Rajyam Party led by his brother Chiranjeevi. Known for his volatility, Pavan Kalyan, in an exclusive interview to Deccan Post, for the first time spoke about his life, views and political tasks. Excerpts.

Tell us about your journey from films to politics?

It happened over a period of time. In fact, my entry into films too was not intentional because, I was never serious about acting and becoming a film star. I have grown up watching films and probably my brother Chiranjeevi’s entry into films and his emergence as a star may have influenced me.

What are your interests?

Basically, I am drawn towards social issues and the ups and downs in life. Even if not in politics, certainly I would have been in public service in one way or the other. You know, for me, pursuit of life is more important than success.

Are you a deep thinker?

It may be so. I used to ponder a lot on issues like why some people are born beautiful and others not. I spent a great deal of my life thinking about God and spirituality. I led the life of an ascetic for over a year. I was more influenced by William Thoreau’s Wallden Pond concept. I read many books on a range of subjects like philosophy.

Who were the heroes that inspired you in your teens?

I was attracted by freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose, of course, Mahatma Gandhi also. When I was 18 or 19, Leftist ideology inspired me, but at the same time, patriotism was always there.

When did you get the idea of joining politics for the first time?

It was a conscious call that I had four or five years ago. Though I was not politically inclined since childhood, I later realised that politics do dictate our public life. I also observed that the rural youth have a lot of passion and there is none to channel their energies in a proper direction.

Would you have joined any other existing political party, if it was not your brother’s party?

No, I would not have joined any other party. But, certainly I would have joined politics. I am so fascinated by this Deccan Plateau and its beautiful rock formations. In the name of development, politicians have destroyed all this. People have been pushed to misery.

So, you have set an ambitious agenda for yourself?

My task is to change a lot of existing things. More importantly the way people look at things – eliminate poverty. Now, no one cares for the common man and his plight. Human dignity has become unimportant now. I want this to be changed.

Do you have any particular political ideology?

I have studied all ideologies including that of RSS and the extreme Left. We do need ideologies as they help us in grappling with the problems of our country. But, I feel that any ideology cannot be blindly applied. Cultural context has to be kept in mind before applying any ideology.

Now that you have been appointed as the president of Yuva Rajyam, youth wing of Praja Rajyam party (PRP). What are your tasks?

My first concern is to bring the youth to politics and public service. I want to build the youth wing in a big way. I have long term plans for this. We want to train a large number of youth allover the state in a phased manner. They will be fully equipped to deal with any kind challenge to the society or the nation.

How do you want to go about it?

My aim is to train about 2.80 lakh youth as active members of the party. Now we are in the process of identifying about five lakh youth. But, it may take a couple of years. Before the elections next April, a few thousands of them may be ready. They will be given 6 to 8 hours basic orientation. And training will be in 3 to 4 levels.

What is the structure of the Yuva Rajyam?

We are going to open our office very shortly where there would be a large number of departments - political, community service and personality development. Soon, I will constitute a state committee and see that district; town and local level committees too are in place.

Our Yuva Rajyam members will be in the age group of 18 to 35 years. May be I am slightly older for the task, but it is okay that the next leadership will come from that age group. I want the youth to be in the forefront of community service.

What kind of leader is Chiranjeevi?

He is a committed person. He is not tempted by power or pelf. As the elder son of the house, he has seen many ups and downs and took upon himself many tasks. My brother is a dedicated hard worker. People have huge expectations from him. They think that he can bring about change in their lives.

CM Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy says, PRP is not at all a force to reckon with?

I do not know why he said so. But, I have seen the response of the youth and people in general. I believe in the power of youth. They will give answers to all questions.

There is criticism that PRP does not have any organisational network, which is crucial to poll management? There is also a delay in appointing party committees?

Everything will be in place very soon. It is not easier to appoint committees in a multi- caste and multi– cultural society like ours. But, let me make it clear that we are fully ready to face the elections.

What about discredited elements from different parties joining your party? Is there any scope for money culture in PRP?

One thing I can say confidently is that tickets will not be sold in our party. They have to be earned by candidates through their clean image and hard work. At our core committee level, we are keen on avoiding this money culture. Even down the line, it will not be allowed.

What would be the impact of Balakrishna and other Nandamuri stars campaigning for TDP?

I do not think there will be any impact. But, let us see how the public will respond. People have already identified PRP with change and social justice.

How many Yuva Rajyam members will be given tickets in the elections?

None of the young members would be craving for power. But, of course, we will see how best we can utilise their services in the elections.

Prajarajyam Leader Ramchadraiah Questions The Credibility of YSR

Talking at a press conference Prajarajyam party leader Ramchandraiah questioned the credibility of YSR, he stated that YSR has acquired illegal lands, and property abusing his power and has amassed large amounts of wealth,

Ramchandraiah pointed at the large investments YSR and family have made recently in iron ore, and industries, and in launching a news paper, he alleged that industrialists and businessmen who got favors from YSR invested in these companies. Further he pointed at how YSR’s wealth increased over the last few years.

Ramchandraiah threw a challenge to YSR asking if he was ready to face a special third party report on his wealth accumulation, he further alleged exploitation of mines by YSR and his father and said that the Congress Party itself had confirmed this long time ago.

Khammam: The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the Khammam Collectorate here on Thursday denouncing the increasing atrocities against women.

Hundreds of activists, including women, joined the first-ever protest rally of the party in the district by holding placards and banners.

Prajarajyam president K. Chiranjeevi on Thursday made a fervent plea to the people to give him ‘just one chance’ to prove what he could do for the benefit of people and society.

Chiranjeevi asked them not to be misled again by political parties which had taken them for a ride for decades, and vote for him. Chiranjeevi said he was in public life to serve the people and not for any material benefits.

Marked deviation

His address to a gathering at ‘Praja Ankitha Sabha’, the first public meeting after the High Court banned road shows by political parties, was significant for the marked deviation from Chiranjeevi’s meetings earlier. The confident note in his voice at his earlier meetings was missing as were the teeming thousands.

In tune with his policy, Mr. Chiranjeevi did not name any party but a major part of his speech was devoted to lashing out at the Congress and the Telugu Desam. Reminding people that they had been taken for granted far too long by political parties and corrupt leaders, he asked them not to fall for political gimmicks and give him ‘just one chance’. Chiranjeevi regretted that instead of ushering in decency and etiquette in politics, leaders of different parties were accusing each other. While one leader alleged that his rival, who owned just two acres of land when he came to Hyderabad was now worth Rs. 2,000 crore, the latter responded by accusing him of earning Rs. 1 crore an hour.

Fluorosis problem

Recalling the suffering of people of Nalgonda district due to fluorosis, he said the problem could be addressed with a pragmatic approach and spending some of the people’s money.

He regretted that poor women in the villages had to trek long distances to fetch a pot of safe drinking water and said if given a chance he would ensure that programmes were implemented well enough for this problem to be rooted out. The Prajarajyam president Chiranjeevi later addressed a meeting in Bhongiri and rounded off the day with a meeting in Pochampalli.

Railway Employees to Seek Prajarajyam Party Ticket

Railway employees are getting ready to contest on the Prajarajyam Party ticket from 11 Assembly constituencies, Railway Mazdoor Union general secretary Taranikanti Srinivas has said.

He said railway employees would ask the PRP leadership to field railway employees from Vijayawada Central (Satyanarayanapuram), Nandigama (reserved), Bapatla (Guntur district) and Ramachandrapuram (East Godavari) constituencies. The decision was taken at the general body meeting here on Sunday. D. Eswara Rao was elected zonal working president, M. Sairam station branch secretary and M.V. Krishna Rao Railway Hospital branch convener a the meeting. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the creation of ‘mega railway colonies’, creation of a ‘mega railway cooperative bank’, scrapping of professional tax for railway employees, amendments to Workers’ Act and Trade Union Act, 1926, and executive powers to trade unions were some issues which Mr. Chiranjeevi favoured.

Prajarajyam Women Stage Dharna

A few thousand women demanded establishment of special courts in every district to try cases of atrocities against women during a day-long dharna organised by the Prajarajyam near Indira Park on Monday.

The dharna was organised to protest against the acid attack on Swapnika and another engineering student in Warangal, which the party felt was a pointer to the alarming increase in attacks on women. Addressing the gathering, K. Nagendra Babu, brother of party president Chiranjeevi, regretted the existence of a male-dominated society even in these times. He promised that when Praja Rajyam came to power, it would give women the respect and recognition they deserved.

Stricter laws

Expressing concern over the rising number of crimes against women, he said it was time women joined hands, irrespective of political affiliation and pressurise the government into having stricter laws in place.

Time-frame

Katti Padma Rao, the party’s ideological spokesperson, demanded that a time frame of one month be fixed for courts to pronounce verdicts.

Party leaders Sobha Nagi Reddy and Vanga Geeta said, there was an urgent need to improve awareness and counsel the youth, while also infusing confidence in young women.

The leaders regretted that the State government was not taking attacks on women seriously and demanded that the laws be made more stringent in cases such as these. An advocate, Madhavi said that as for the acid attack on Swapnika, the State government had literally closed the case by shooting down the accused.

“But what about other cases, pertaining to the killing of Prasannalakshmi in Guntur, Srilakshmi and Ayesha Meeran in Vijayawada?”, she asked.

hiranjeevi and Srihari to Act in Wednesday Remake?

Chiranjeevi is going to do a remake- The Wednesday-the Bollywood film.
The film deals with terrorist back drop and a common man's answer to terror

Though there was rumors that JD will do this remake, it is not the truth.

Now a Tollywood producer is planning the film with Chiranjeevi and Srihari.

Chiranjeevi is likely to play Nashiruddun Sha's role and Sreehari will play the police officers role.

The 95% of the film goes around these two roles and Nashiruddin role confirms to a building. So Chiranjeevi opted to do this film before election.

Let us wait and see- how far this project could get materialized.

Act to Check Violence Sought Demands PRP Women Wing

Demanding prevention of atrocities on women, delivering immediate justice to the victims and suitable compensation to them, the Prajarrajyam Party’s women wing today staged a dharna at Indira park here today.

The dharna was organised as part of the party programme to sensitise the women about atrocities on them in the wake of acid attack on two girls in Warangal recently.

The women rent the air with slogans and demanded that women should be provided with adequate security and immediate action on part of the Government.

Addressing the dharna party leader and Chiranjeevi’s brother Nagendra Babu said that women had to be more assertive and alert. Had the Government acted in time on the murders of Ayesha, Sri Laxmi the latest incident would not have taken place, he remarked.

Speaking on the occasion party leader Shobha Nagi Reddy pointed out that the colleges were not inculcating moral values in the students and they were concentrating only on money and ranks.

``Our party would fight for the cause of women whether they vote to us or not. Our party would not use this issue to gain political mileage,’’ she declared.

Former MP Vanga Geeta wanted a separate Act on the lines of SC Atrocities Prevention Act in place to check the violence against women and said that the culprits should not be granted bail till the case is disposed.

Sarojini, mother of Pratyusha, film artiste, who was murdered few years ago demanded that there should be a permanent mechanism to protect women.

Party ideologue Kathi Padma Rao said that the Left Parties were brazenly allying with the TDP, which muffled the Pratyusha case.

Prajarajyam will Strive to End Political Corruption

The prajarajyam (PRP) would strive to eliminate political corruption which had been India’s bane so much that many members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies were getting commissions in the constituency development funds. Massive allocations were made in the budget but only a negligible portion of that was reaching the beneficiaries because of corruption which had taken deeper roots in recent times, said PRP advisor and manifesto committee co-convener KSR Murthy.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Murthy said political corruption had become such a menace that even Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee had sought the scrapping of MPLADS to stem the rot but no member of Parliament agreed with his view. There could be no better evidence of this sordid state of affairs than the fact that the members of Parliament were not prepared to forfeit their share of the pie, he said.

The MLAs were no exception to thistrend.PRP would set an example by promoting persons with clean track record and, challenged that even a booth level worker of it could not be bought by those seeking to subvert the electoral process.

The PRP leader said the party’s membership drive was intensified and each person who aspired for ticket was asked to enrol at least 10,000 people. District presidents and other executive members would be appointed soon, Mr. Murthy said.

Prajarajyam Activists Buzz with Enthusiasm

A festive atmosphere was witnessed at the Prajarajyam city-cum-district office located at Sikhamani Centre here with local leaders and ticket aspirants showing an undeniable upbeat mood for the party’s first major political meeting here on Sunday since its inception.

The otherwise-sleepy Sikhamani Centre near Madhu Chowk woke up to a new beehive of activity, as the PRP activists worked tirelessly to decorate every nook and corner there with colourful posters, festoons, flags and most importantly their favourite leader Chiranjeevi’s pictures. The young volunteers wore PRP caps and T-shirts with the party’s colours and its leader’s pictures.

Flattered by an endless inflow of volunteers, who were ready to help in making the public meeting a success, the PRP leaders distributed campaign material. A sizeable number of women took up the responsibilities to organise the big event of the day.

A clearly enthusiastic mood prevailed among the second-rung leadership, particularly those wanting to make the big start in politics by throwing their weight behind the PRP. Ticket aspirants for three Assembly constituencies were seen coordinating some work or the other. The atmosphere provided evidence of how intense competition would be seen among ticket aspirants in the days to come.

“Our present activity has nothing to do with the chances of our getting ticket. It is our first big political meeting here. So there is a lot of euphoria,” said Gundapu Chandrasekhar, who left the Telugu Desam Party and joined the PRP in the presence of Mr. Chiranjeevi sometime back.

Added attraction

He said with confidence that there would be more people becoming active in the PRP in the near future.

Women activists wearing sarees with the display of ‘rising sun’ symbol stood as special attraction throughout the day at the PRP office.

An interesting feature of the show was that Tupakula Munemma of Yanadi tribe from Nellore district came all the way from her native place to attend the meeting.

Her presence was requested and ensured to underline the importance that the PRP would give to its women leaders and particularly those hailing from weaker sections.

Ms. Munemma, who was the first ever PRP candidate declared by Mr. Chiranjeevi to contest Assembly polls on the party ticket, started from Nellore in the morning to reach the public meeting venue in the evening.

Committed to Social Justice, says Allu Aravind

The public meeting organised by the prajarajyam (PRP) here on Sunday on the occasion of the inauguration of its Krishna district office witnessed an impressive gathering, as party leader Allu Aravind reiterated the party’s commitment to extending social justice to all sections in the State.

Sympathisers, activists and enthusiasts from all corners of the district attended and made the public meeting a success. Youngsters and women also participated in the meeting in sizeable numbers, even as all roads leading to the venue were choked with people.

Dig at Congress

Mr. Aravind used the opportunity to make an indirect attack on the ruling Congress saying that the fruits and benefits of the welfare and developmental programmes were not reaching the intended sections of society.

“The benefits are not reaching the last person. It is important that every poor family receives support and succour,” he said.

Reasserting the prajarajyam’s priority in addressing the problems of the weaker sections, Mr. Aravind said that real progress in the society would be possible only when the benefits of developmental programmes reached one and all. More efforts should be made in this regard, and the PRP would be in the forefront of ensuring this to the welfare of all in the State.

Tupakula Munemma, dalit woman from Nellore district, said that she was very happy at the new recognition given to her by the PRP led by Chiranjeevi.

She said that a lot needed to be done for improving the lot of weaker sections who were facing a number of problems. Ms. Munemma was the first candidate whose name was announced to contest the Assembly elections on the PRP ticket.

Rousing reception

Earlier, a rousing reception was accorded to Mr. Aravind at the Gannavaram airport. Senior party leaders Kamineni Srinivas, city leaders Kesineni Nani, Y.S. Murali, Boppana Bhava Kumar, Gundapu Chandrasekhar and others were among those who received the senior leader.

Mr. Aravind came in a rally in which youth and activists participated in hundreds of bikes and cars. The rally passed through Ramavarappadu, Ring Road, Benz Circle, Mahatma Gandhi Road before reaching Sikhamani Centre, the venue of the public meeting and the location of the party office.

Chiranjeevi says prajarajyam Doors Open for Tie-Ups

Prajarajyam president Chiranjeevi on Sunday announced his party’s decision to keep the doors open for alliances with other parties for the next Assembly elections.

Admitting that the party was in touch with Telangana Rashtra Samiti, he, however, replied in the negative when asked whether the prajarajyam leadership received any signals from the Bharatiya Janata Party central leadership. “We are in touch with several parties, but nothing concrete has come out as yet,” he said.

Asked whether he was confident of repeating TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao’s feat of 1983, he said he would not like to be “overconfident”.

Mr. Chiranjeevi was speaking to reporters after announcing the nomination of his brother and film actor Pavan Kalyan as chief of Yuva Rajyam, the party’s youth wing. A good number of fans, who gathered at the party office here at Jubilee Hills gate-crashed into the venue and in the process, broke a glass door at the entrance.

Mr. Chiranjeevi defended his decision to appoint his close relatives to key party posts claiming his brother-in-law Allu Arvind, who wields a considerable influence over the party, was more a friend to him than a relative while his brothers Nagendra Babu and Pavan Kalyan had their own public image.

“It is not appropriate to keep them in the backseat when they have capability and public image. They should not be denied opportunity just because they happen to be my relatives”, he averred.

Mr. Pavan Kalyan said he would discharge the responsibilities entrusted to him by his actor-turned-politician brother.

Asserting that he would not contest in the elections and continue acting, he termed as “hypothetical” a query asking whether he would not contest even if Mr. Chiranjeevi wants him to do so.

Sharad Yadav Calls on Chiranjeevi, Goud

In a significant development, Janata Dal (U) president Sharad Yadav called on Prajarajyam(PRP) chief Chiranjeevi at the latter’s office here today.

Both the leaders are understood to have discussed the current political situation.

Janata Dal (U) is an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, Sharad Yadav clarified that he did not meet Chiranjeevi as an emissary of the BJP. Complimenting Chiranjeevi for championing the cause of social justice, he said that was the reason why he had come to meet the star-turned-politician Earlier, Yadav met Nava Telangana Party (NTP) president T Devender Goud at the latter’s residence.

Goud claimed that they did not discuss the possibility of an electoral tie-up but added, ‘‘Yadav is working for social justice just as we are and both the parties will keep working together for the same cause.’’ Sharad Yadav also shook hands with TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu at a private function but Naidu did not have a one-on-one with Yadav.

Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi told reporters that his party was open to ‘‘discuss’’ alliances with any party.

He confirmed that his party had held negotiations with the TRS but hastened to add that they were still keeping their options open for pre-poll alliances with like-minded parties, including the TRS. Chiranjeevi also anointed his younger brother Pawan Kalyan as the party’s youth wing, Yuva Rajyam, president.

Power star Pawan Kalyan, brother of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) founder Chiranjeevi, is all set to head the youth wing of the party. According to sources, the youth wing of the PRP is likely to be named as Yuva Rajyam.

A decision to this effect had been made and a formal announcement was expected to be made on Sunday, the sources said.

Hyderabad, Dec. 7: Proving the allegations of family fiefdom in Praja Rajyam correct, the PR chief Chiranjeevi appointed his younger brother Pavan Kalyan, 37, as the head of the party’s youth wing "Yuva Rajyam" on Sunday. Chiranjeevi described his brother as a person who is socially conscious. Mr Kalyan in turn praised the PR chief as a humanist. Chiranjeevi Interacts with Lawyers

Chiranjeevi, a day after his Praja Ankita Yatra in Rayalaseema districts ended yesterday where he received an overwhelming welcome by his fans throughout, met a different set of fans today - lawyers from around the State at an interactive meeting here.

“I expected an intellectual crowd here but, but I found all of you very jovial which is exactly my style,” the Praja Rajyam Party president said. The meeting which was attended by more than 300 lawyers from across the State had a liberal mix of fans also among them making the crowd swell to more than a thousand.

Speaking on the occasion, former Union Minister and chairman of PRP’s Manifesto Committee and Legal Cell, Shiva Shankar, said that a team of 8 lawyers with one leading the unit would be formed in every district to assist the candidates to file their nominations besides educating the party cadre on various Acts.

On record though, spokesman Parakala Prabhakar reiterated that given the ‘stupendous’ response from the people to party president K. Chiranjeevi’s ‘Praja Ankita Yatra’, they were in favour of going to the hustings alone.

“When senior leaders of other political leaders come here and convey their wish to meet our president and other seniors, courtesy demands that we meet. Bardhan when the latter was in the city on Saturday. Meanwhile, the CPI State secretary K. Narayana still does not rule out the possibility of an alliance with them. The Praja Rajyam party went ahead a notch in having its organisational set-up in place with general secretary Allu Aravind announcing that in a week’s time they would constitute State and district-level committees.

He said this while addressing a convention of the Backward Classes from East and West Godavari and Krishna districts here on Friday. He said that it was only after the entry of the PR party into the political arena that political parties appeared to be waking up from slumber.

Without taking any names, he said a political party had done nothing in its four and a half years of rule and was now talking of 33 per cent reservation of tickets for BCs in the next elections. Another party he said, was talking of allocating 200 of the 294 seats in the Assembly for BCs. The term ‘social justice’ appeared to be getting re-defined with every political party chanting the ‘social justice mantra’ and went on to add that they were even beginning to remember Mahatma Jyotirao Phule only after the Praja Rajyam showcased its respect for him.

Party’s spokesperson Katti Padma Rao said only the Praja Rajyam would be able to achieve justice on the political and social fronts. After the elections in 2009, it would be really be ‘Praja Rajyam’ (people’s rule) and ‘Mana Rajyam’ (our rule), he declared.

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi called upon people on Friday to be vigilant as a plot was being hatched to delete the votes of his fans and supporters.

Addressing people at Bhakrapet in Siddhavatam mandal and Vontimitta in Rajampet mandal, he asked the people to ensure that they enrolled themselves as voters, as “vote was their weapon” to decide their future.

“I attained stardom and have the means to lead a comfortable life, but a desire lingered in my mind to serve people and hence I entered politics on the people’s invitation.”

Speaking at Nandalur, he promised to ensure the revival of Allwyn refrigeration unit which was closed down about a decade ago, in order to generate employment for youth. Chiranjeevi reiterated his resolve to end corruption and asked the people to gear up to end the scourge. Corruption which is detrimental to the interests of society should be weeded out. Chiranjeevi’s three-day tour of Kadapa district ended in the night with a road show at Railway Kodur.

Earlier, on Thursday, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that his party was not against irrigation projects, but was only opposed to corruption, irregularities and lack of quality in project works.

“Irrigation projects are very much needed and none disputes it, but we do not want poorly built projects that lack quality,” he said while addressing a series of roadside meetings in Kadapa city. He also cited the collapse of a Pothireddipadu vent.

Stating that he had never opposed projects, he alleged that some political leaders were “putting words in my mouth”.

Mid-day meals

Questioning non-implementation of a G.O. issued to extend the mid-day meals scheme in madarasas, he demanded the government and official machinery to implement the scheme in all madarasas.

Talk about Praja Rajyam being a party of "party of brothers and brother-in-laws" gained ground on Friday when Mr Allu Aravind, the brother-in-law of Chiranjeevi, presided over a convention of Backward Classes organised by the party.

The meeting was organised to chalk out strategies to win the support of BCs. During the convention, Mr Aravind said that organisational committees in the PR would be appointed in a week.

It may be recalled that Mr Aravind had led the PR delegation to meet the director-general of police, Mr S.S.P. Yadav, and the State Human Rights Commission chairperson, Justice Subhashan Reddy, to submit a memorandum over the alleged attack on PR leaders at Pulivendula on Wednesday.

While addressing the BC gathering, Mr Aravind said that the proposed public meeting "BC Atma Gourava Sabha" would be held in Hyderabad in January to garner the support of the BCs.

The PR leadership is also planning to hold BC conventions across the state so as to understand the problems being faced by oppressed classes. Death seems to be shadowing the Praja Ankita Yatra of Praja Rajyam party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi, as one more fan died on the last leg of yatra in the district today.

P Brahamiah (25) from Peddaneni Kaluva Dalitwada in Tsundupalle mandal, along with six of his friends, was on his way to Kadapa for participating in the Chiranjeevi road show when their Tata Sumo Vehicle met with an accident at Pallanagarpalle in Ramapuram mandal. A speeding lorry collided head-on with it, resulting in the instantaneous death of Brahamaiah.

His six friends and the Sumo driver were seriously injured in the mishap and were shifted to the Rayachoti Government Hospital.

With the condition of Ramachandra (30) and Yerraiah (25) worsening, they were shifted to SVR Ruia Hospital in Tirupati where their condition is reported to be critical. The others, including driver Penchalaiah, are undergoing treatment at Rayachoti. There were three deaths and injuries to ten others during the three-day Yatra in the district.

As for the Yatra itself, it evoked overwhelming response with thousands of Chiranjeevi’s fans and supporters turning up in large numbers at his road shows. People lined up the road on both sides for about 8 km from Bhakrapeta to Ontimitta, while his fans were seen showering two truckloads of flowers on him all along.

Earlier, Chiranjeevi visited Pedda Dargha (Ameen Peer Dargha) and offered prayers there. He spent nearly one hour in the shrine and was explained its significance by Dargah Committee secretary Anwar. Later, he offered prayers at Pastoral House and was blessed by the bishop. He stayed there for the night.

Handloom weavers presented him with a saree, asking him to give it to his mother.

Moved by the gesture, Chiranjeevi said that Madhavarm was as famous as Dharmavarm and it was an honour for him to receive a saree from the Madhavaram weavers. He assured them that once he came to power, he would make it a priority to address the problems of weavers.

On reaching Tallapaka, passing Ontimitta and Nandalur on his way, he said that he was really thrilled to be standing on the land where saint-poet Tallapaka Annamacharya had lived once. His speeches at Rajampeta and Kodur had an emotional tinge.

District Congress leaders, however, belittled the public response, saying the crowds turned out just to see their favourite star. DCC president K Suresh Babu said the people of Kadapa viewed him as a flim personality rather than a political leader.

In the State capital, party cadres ‘walked on their knees’ for some time near Nampally area to depict ‘a stunted democracy’ . In Secunderabad, they washed Mahatma Gandhi’s statue with milk, symbolic of cleansing the insult to democracy.

At a protest meet near Indira Park, party spokesperson P. Mitra denounced the Pulivendula attack saying there was no place for such violence in a progressive democracy.

Barring few incidents of protests, Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi’s road show in Pulivendula, the home turf of Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, was a grand success.

Nearly 20,000 people accorded a warm welcome to the PRP chief. He was greeted with shouts of joy and slogans by the people, who patiently waited for the actorturned- politician, who was behind schedule by four hours. He was supposed to reach Pulivendula by 10 a.m. but arrived at around 2 p.m.

All the commercial establishments downed their shutters down and decorated their shops with PRP flags and banners to welcome their matinee idol. Chiranjeevi too, responded in a emotional way, clearly overwhelmed by the reception he got from the people. In the aftermath of yesterday’s violence in Pulivendula, wherein PRP leaders Shoba Nagi Reddy and Kotagiri Vidyadhar Rao were attacked by some unidentified miscreants, suspected to be Congress activists, and PRP leaders holding the Chief Minister responsibility for it, the Congress activists, staged dharnas wearing black badges at some places along the yatra route of the PRP chief. At some places PRP flags were also burnt by the protestors.

When one Congress supporter, identified as Kuwait Gangadhar, assaulted a PRP activists and tried to damage the party flag, he was taken into custody.

A 32-year-old youth P Venkata Narayana Reddy from Sunkesula village in Simhadripuram mandal was critically injured, after he fell off from a building terrace as result of a stampede that took place when everyone rushed to have glimpse of the megastar.

He was immediately rushed to Pulivendula Hospital and later shifted to RIMS Hospital in Kadapa.

Assault on Praja Rajyam leaders in Pulivendula

Chiranjeevi Demands Compensation to Farmers

The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president Chiranjeevi on Tuesday demanded the State Government to pay Rs 3,000 as compensation to the groundnut farmers who lost the crop due to poor quality of the seeds.

He made this demand at Kalluru village while continuing the third day of his third leg of Praja Ankita Yatra.

He toured groundnut crop rich areas of Garladinne, Pamidi, Kalluru, Rayalacheruvu, Yadiki, Bhogasamudram and Tadipatry today. He blamed the Government for the failure of the groundnut crop in the region. Groundnut is being cultivated in about 18 lakh acres in this district, the PRP president said adding that it is the main stay of the farmers of this area.

He expressed anguish over the woes of groundnut farmers and said that they were unable to get even 2 quintals of yield from one acre where they are supposed to get at least 10 quintals.

Even the price in the market is meagre, fetching them not more than Rs 1,000 per quintal, the PRP president said.

While addressing the gathering at Pamidi, Chiranjeevi regretted the problems being experienced by the business people of the village.

The star-turned-politician said Pamidi village which is known as second Mumbai for its production and export of quality textiles, those engaged in the business are not supported by the Government in any way.

Speaking at Garladinne, the megastar expressed shock over the death of two people at Dhrmavaram yesterday in his road show. He conveyed his condolences to the families of Tajuddin and Adinarayana who died in the stampede and promised that the party would take care of the bereaved families. He urged his fans to control themselves to ward of untoward incidents.

While stating that his aim is to bring social justice, the PRP chief said that the Boya community people of Anantapuram would get fair deal in his party. He received a memorandum submitted by the representatives of the community.

Even as the Praja Rajyam Party (PR) managers are busy finalising the finer details of the party president Chiranjeevi’s road shows, the ‘ratham’ to take him to people is getting ready at a workshop specialising in fabricating such vehicles on the outskirts of the city.

Contrary to expectations that it would be a hi-tech, gadget-equipped set of wheels, it appears to be just a light commercial vehicle converted into something that will effectively serve as a moving dais for the leader on short-haul drives.

Modifications

Built on a cabin and chassis of an Eicher Mitsubishi 1095 costing Rs. 7.65 lakh, the workers at Real Cars Auto Garage added some custom-built modifications. Managing Director of the garage, M.N.V. Ravindra Babu, said the additions included a raised platform and an air-conditioned cabin with three comfort seats, at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh extra.

The raised platform can take the weight of at least five people, including the leader, for whom there is a small, collapsible step a foot higher. Also in place is a high-end sound system with 10 speakers designed to carry Mr. Chiranjeevi’s voice across to audiences in a 200-metre radius.

Suspense hangs

The veil of secrecy that surrounds anything and everything has also interestingly been extended to this workshop.

The ‘ratham’ has been given two coats of white paint over a week ago and the fabricators are awaiting word as to the words that are to be inscribed, as to the name of the ‘ratham’. Only a day ago, party managers are said to have asked the garage to have a sticker affixed, depicting the ‘sun’ with blazing rays, the symbol of the Praja Rajyam.

Praja Rajyam to test waters in local elections

In what could be its first litmus test in electoral politics after its grand formation in Tirupati on August 26, Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam party is all set to contest the ZPTC and the MPTC by-elections to be held in the second week of October.

But, the catch is that its candidates may not get an official election symbol and they may be contesting as independents since the party’s registration process with the Election Commission is yet to be formalised.

The district administration is holding the by-elections to two ZPTCs and four MPTCs in next three weeks.

The Allagadda ZPTC seat fell vacant after the death of its member V Adenna, a Telugu Desam candidate, while the Aluru seat fell vacant as Masala Eranna, who won on the Congress ticket, resigned after he fell out with local minister M Mareppa. Sources said the Prajarajyam is keen to wrest both the two seats.

Allagadda natives former MP Bhuma Nagi Reddy and his wife Shobha Reddy, who have joined the Prajarajyam, have already begun moves to pitchfork their staunch follower Adenna’s son Ramana from Alladadda. Ramana has joined the Prajarajyam party recently.

“The time has come for us to show our strength in the constituency by winning the seat with a huge majority,” a close associate of Nagi Reddy told media on Thursday.

But, sources said that both the Congress and the TDP are also attaching equal importance to the seat.

The bypoll for the Aluru ZPTC seat may turn out to be key for Eranna, who has also joined the Prajarajyam. “The election will be interesting since Mareppa, Eranna and MLC Padmaja of TDP are vying for honours,” an insider close to Padmaja said.

Wearing the namaz ki topi (cap worn by Muslims while offering prayers), Chiranjeevi arrived at the dargah at about 6.15 pm and went inside the place where he joined Muslims in offering prayers. After spending about 15 minutes, he came out. By then, there was a huge crowd, comprising mostly youth, who had rushed to the dargah from nearby villages.

Chiranjeevi walked out of the dargah and went on to the dais erected in a vast expanse of land outside. As the actor was climbing the dais, youth jostled with one another to climb the dais, making it difficult for the organisers to keep them at bay. Later, Chiranjeevi said, “I am really a lucky man to visit this place. I will do my best to bring back the past glory to the dargah.” He said he was moved by the overwhelming response from the people and added he would work with commitment to address their problems. He recalled how the Muslim community had showered affection on him even when he was a child. “When I was a child, my teacher was a Muslim. Scores of farmers affected by the Pharma Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Polepalli and two villages nearby today staged a daylong "Bhoosatyagraha" at the venue demanding that the State Government return their land.

Of the 1,000 acres acquired by the State Government in 2002, only 155 acres were earmarked for the Pharma SEZ and the remaining land still lies unutilised.

Praja Rajyam Party founder Chiranjeevi is likely to visit Polepalli tomorrow to express solidarity with the SEZ victims.

Today, the protesters — including several women belonging to Polepalli, Gundlagadda tanda and Mudireddipalle—came to the SEZ around 11:00 a.m. and staged a dharna till the evening.

"We are only demanding the return of the remaining 845 acres which have not been utilised so far," Polepalli SEZ Vyatireka Ikya Sanghatana (PSVIS) convener Madhu Kagula told to this website's newspaper.

According to him, the State Government acquired 1,000 acres in 2002 from 320 farmers to set up an SEZ, which was notified in November 2006. Some farmers who lost their lands to the SEZ are working as labourers in the companies that are being set up on the land, but tragically nearly 42 have died over the last six years due to hardship from unemployment, compounded by delay in receipt of compensation.

Chiru PRP rules out truck with any coalition

A day after his party announced its willingness to forge ties with other parties, Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi, however, ruled out joining any coalition in the State in the next elections.

“We never said we are against alliances with other like-minded parties, but the PR will not be a part of any coalition,” he said.

The statement assumes significance in the light of the efforts by the Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary K. Narayana to bring the PR, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Left parties together as an alternative to the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party.

In an informal chat with reporters here on Wednesday after releasing a book on Jyothirao Phule authored by K. Padma Rao, Mr. Chiranjeevi said though the party was not averse to alliances, it was too early to think about them at this juncture. Indicating that the situation was fluid, he said there was still no clarity as to which way the situation would turn.

Mr. Chiranjeevi said his meeting with Dr. Narayana a couple of days ago was aimed at exchanging views on the national and State political situation and “we did not discuss anything about the alliances.” Replying to queries, he said there was no indication from the TRS for an alliance and the PR would take an appropriate decision “once there is movement from that side.” “Moreover, we have not attained a level of maturity where we can give a positive or negative response to the proposals for tie-ups,” he admitted.

Political scenario turns unclear in AP

The nebulous political scenario in the state has given rise to rank opportunism, with perhaps, except for the Congress, every party is in talks with every other party for forging an alliance for the 2009 general and assembly elections.

Leading the pack is Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), who on Tuesday indicated that he is putting together a grand alliance comprising the TRS, the Prajarajyam of Chiranjeevi and the two Left parties. At the same time, both TRS and Telugu Desam Party sources have indicated that they are in talks with each other with regard to an alliance.

“While TRS and TDP are ready to sew up a deal, there is an opposition from the rank and file of the former in Telangana. They want a clear enunciation of the Telanagana policy from TDP. What is more they also want to assess who is more stronger - TDP or Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam,” a political analyst said.

While the CPM is toying with the idea of sailing with the TDP, the CPI is keeping its options open. Denying that the party has struck any alliance with the TRS as was claimed by KCR two days ago, CPI state secretary K Narayana said on Tuesday that he had met KCR and also Chiranjeevi on the issue of alliance but that nothing had as yet been finalised. The two Left parties are scheduled to hold a joint meeting on Wednesday to discuss their options.

Prajarajyam Party spokesperson P Mitra confirmed on Tuesday that a meeting did take place between Chiranjeevi and Narayana on September 21 but that only views were exchanged on various issues. “The PRP is ready to join the CPI in agitations on common issues but no poll alliances have been discussed or finalised,” he said.

The present hazy situation would clear a little bit by the middle of October, by when the Telugu Desam Party is expected to announce its Telangana policy and the fate of Prajarajyam will be a little more clear. “For its political survival, the TDP would have no option but to announce a pro-Telangana policy and go for a tie-up with either TRS or the Nava Telangana Praja Party of T Devender Goud. Chiranjeevi too would have to go for a similar tie up with a Telangana regional party. Who ties up with whom will depend on the number of seats asked and given,” said one leader.

The two Left parties appear to be going in different directions at present, with the CPM threatening to sail with the TDP and the CPI indicating its preference for Chiranjeevi.
Only the Congress, being politically isolated at present, seems to be blissfully saved of this excruciating exercise. However, analysts do not rule out a sudden shift in the party on the Telangana issue which would make even more interesting the run up to the next year’s polls.

Apparently CPI is taking the lead in bringing together opposition parties to forge a third front as an alternative to Congress and Telugu Desam Party. Chiranjeevi started his Praja Prasthanam (in case if you do not know the meaning of Prasthanam, it means Journey) today 20 September at Siricilla, Karimnagar district in Telangana and met families of weavers who had committed suicide due to financial distress. After a brief visit to the textile park, he called on three families whose bread-earners had committed suicide due to debts. Chiranjeevi sat on the floor along with the poor weavers and inquired about their problems. The families poured out their woes and narrated how the successive governments have failed to address their grievances. The weavers told him that they were fast losing hope in the absence of credit and marketing facilities, and employment opportunities.

Later addressing the huge gathering, Chiranjeevi said he was deeply moved by the troubles of weavers and vowed to work for the improvement of their living standards. And assured that the next government will be ‘people rule’ (Praja Rajyam) where people would be able to decide government agenda.

“Gandhiji had once said that handloom weaving will usher in a revolution but today it is unfortunate that weavers are forced to end their lives,” he said, adding that Sircilla had become synonymous with suicides.

The actor promised that if voted to power his party would ensure that weavers from Sircilla don’t have to migrate to other states and other countries for jobs.

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi would embark on his much awaited districts tour in the first week of next month. The exact date would be announced in a day or two, Chiranjeevi told reporters here on monday.

"The tour would be planned keeping in view of the Dusserah and Dipavali festivals. We do not want to disturb the festival mood. I would tour three districts in five or six days and will give a break before the commencement of the next leg of the tour," the actor said.

Chiranjeevi appointed former member of parliament KSR Murty as chairman of a committee which would study the problems of the weavers in the State with a special focus on the Siricilla weavers,whom he visited few days ago. The committee would submit its report within a week and its suggestions would be incorporated in the party manifesto.

Several senior leaders from different parties are joining the Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in the district. BJP senior leader Manda Ailaiah, who has been in the party since its inception, joined the Praja Rajyam. He said that he was vexed with the "anti-BC" policies of the BJP and was impressed by the social agenda of the actor’s party. He said that though he contested from the Shayampet constituency for three times, every time he was betrayed by the former MP C. "Chiranjeevi has never aided people in times of natural disasters like tsunami, cyclones or bomb blasts. He's now shedding crocodile tears over the plight of weavers," Roja said addressing a gathering of Telugu Yuvatha workers and IT professionals at the TDP office yesterday.
Around the same time, Vijaya Santhi was also making snide remarks against the Praja Rajyam Party chief saying he is a rank junior to me in politics. "Don't compare me to him," she said.
"People of Telangana would not trust Chiranjeevi's words as he lacked sincerity," she said and cautioned him not to take people of the region for granted.
While verbal attacks from other political leaders are obvious, the Praja Rajyam Party leader also has to contend with the diatribe from his erstwhile colleagues in the film industry.
Besides Roja and Vijaya Santhi, notable Chiranjeevi critics in the film industry are actor Rajasekhar and his actress-turned-director wife Jeevita and producer Tammareddi Bharadwaja.
Bharadwaja produced two films with Chiranjeevi in his early years as an actor while Rajasekhar did a cameo in a Chiranjeevi film. Rajasekhar and Jeevita have recently joined the Congress party in the state.

"People affected by SEZ in Mahbubnagar district, tribals being uprooted by the bauxite mining in Vizag area and fishermen facing the threat of evacuation to make way for coastal corridors. Chiranjeevi wants to meet all these sections to know the dark side of the so-called development in the state, " sources told.

"Though the suicide of farmers and weavers is a serious matter, the plight of the project-affected persons is equally a serious one. Even though some NGOs are working to help them, political parties have not been able to visualise the true dimension of the PAP," the sources said. As of now there are nearly 10 lakh people facing the threat of evacuation due to various projects and "the compensation is meagre. Rehabilitation is either not taken up or is tardy, and above all the cultural shock they received due to uprooting is immense," the sources said.

Party spokesman P Prabhakar said PRP would not indulge in abusing other political parties but would instead go directly to the suffering masses. It would not only understand their problems but come out with alternative plans to improve their lives.

Among other issues, chronic fluoride problem in Nalgonda districts also finds place in the priority list of the star. Apart from these familiarisation trips to problematic regions in the state, "The star is particular about visiting the church in the Medak town and the famous Pedda Masjid in Kadapa," the sources added.

Chiranjeevi is burning the midnight oil to pore over books on political science, the Indian Constitution and public administration to prepare for his new role as a politician.
The actor, who has enacted many a character in reel life, may never have taken such pains for any portrayal. But then this is the meatiest role he has ever got.

According to aides, the Praja Rajyam chief is also reading up on all the burning issues of the state, including categorisation of scheduled castes, Naxalism, farmers' suicides and price rise to keep abreast of all major developments. Mr Chiranjeevi, who is on a statewide tour, apparently wants to deliver speeches with as much substance as style, something which his scriptwriters often forget to do in films.

"He is thoroughly examining every problem being faced by the common man," said an aide. "He is not just analysing the problem, but is also taking advice from experts to find solutions." To formulate pro-poor policies for his party, the actor is also going through the election manifestos of different political parties.

"He is committed to the uplift of the downtrodden," said Ms Shobha Nagi Reddy, former Telugu Desam leader who joined the Praja Rajyam." "He is very keen on understanding the travails of the poor." Chiranjeevi struck a chord with the people during the Tirupati launch of his party by speaking about his lower middle-class upbringing. But to carry forward the momentum, he has to strike a chord in terms of his approach to issues as well. This means some rote learning to digest key facts and figures. Megastar Chiranjeevi who has now got into the groove of formulating the manifesto and hierarchy of his Praja Rajyam party has announced that he is impressed with the Tamilnadu style of functioning in the parties when it comes to forming alliances. He said that they would form an alliance depending on how it would benefit the state and its people instead of themselves.

Meanwhile, he has also started chalking out plans for his yatra likely to commence this month end and in this process he wants to establish coordinating committees before his arrival and this should have a minimum of hundred members to be known as a committee. Amongst them, a three member group will be chosen as the representatives for that particular committee and they will be known as a co-ordination committee.

Finally, he said that a proper background check would be done on those who are aspiring for posts in the party and has dropped curtains on a possible alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Given his set of conditions, it remains to be seen who will fit the bill of his casting and take forward the story has begun with the megastar.

In fact, Chiranjeevi had played a role in popularising Gandhigiri in the state through his film Shankar Dada Zindabad, a remake of the popular Munnabhai MBBS.
It is known that the Praja Rajyam chief has been going through books of self-help gurus such as Stephen R. Covey, Norman Vincent Peale and Dale Carnegie to teach his party workers a non-confrontationist problem-solving approach in political matters. Even if the Praja Rajyam leaders come under attack from political rivals, the party would exercise utmost restraint while responding.
"Chiranjeevi wants to establish moral standards in the political system," said the Praja Rajyam spokesperson, Mr Parakala Prabhakar. The rule is applicable to everyone and this was impressed upon Rayalaseema strongman Bhuma Nagi Reddy.
"Even Tammineni Sitaram was given a lecture on non violence when he joined," said a close aide of Chiranjeevi. Chiranjeevi will not wear Khadi to advertise his Gandhism and will continue to don his customary white shirt and black trousers. "You won’t find any change in my attire. I want to go to the public with my normal dress," Chiranjeevi told this correspondent.

Major parties vie to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day

Leaders of various political parties vied with each other to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Hyderabad State in Telangana region.

The Congress, Left parties, TRS, Telugu Desam Party, Lok Satta Party besides the newly launched Praja Rajyam organised separate programmes where they honoured freedom fighters. Unlike in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the State government did not organise any official programme in spite of the demand by various parties that it should celebrate the occasion.

It was on this day in 1948 that Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union following a military operation, also known as “police action” ordered by then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, surrendered to the Indian Army after initially refusing to accede to the Indian Union for 13 months when India attained independence from British rule.

Propriety questioned

At a joint public meeting to commemorate the Telangana Armed Struggle against the Nizam, the CPI and CPI(M) questioned the propriety of other mainstream political parties celebrating the event and said it was obviously to gain political mileage.

CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu said the BJP had no reason to celebrate, especially in the present circumstances when its cadre attacked Christians in Orissa and Karnataka. CPI State secretary K. Narayana said these parties had no connection whatsoever with events while the BJP even claimed that the day symbolised the triumph of the struggle by people against the Nizam-led Muslims.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), on the other hand, praised the Nizam, who patronised the land owning class against whom the Communists waged a relentless struggle which resulted in the death of 4,000 people.

The Deshmukhs, Patels and Patwaris who constituted the feudal lords in Nizam’s rule cut across religious lines.

Freedom fighters feted

At Gandhi Bhavan, APCC president D. Srinivas hoisted the national flag and felicitated freedom fighters – M. S. Rajalingam, Paga Pulla Reddy, Mydam Ramachandraiah, K. Prem Raj Yadav, V.R.Ramachary and S. Raghuveer Rao.

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi was present at the hoisting of the national flag in the party office by a freedom fighter Narayan Rao Pawar who was said to be a follower of Ravi Narayan Reddy, the doyen of the Telangana Armed Struggle. Chiranjeevi said the party would accord the status of ‘Independence Day’ to September 17 if it came to power.

Historic event

The Telugu Desam observed the historic event with the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu unfurling the national flag and honouring seven freedom fighters, Narayan Rao Pawar, B. Sridhar, Parsa Satyanarayana, Mallu Swarajyam, N. Srinivas Reddy, Pitchi Reddy and Ch. Rajeswara Rao.

The TRS, the Lok Satta Party, the Freedom Fighters Forum For Social Justice observed the Hyderabad State Liberation and Arya Pratinidhi Sabha which was in the forefront of the struggle, also organised celebrations.

In the wake of the advent of Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam, and given the likelihood of a tie-up between the Telugu Desam and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh has its work cut out in the 2009 elections According to a latest survey, the party is facing a serious dent in its support in the three north coastal and the twin Godavari districts following the launching of Praja Rajyam, which is tipped to do well in all these districts — Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, East and West Godavari.

Conducted by an independent agency for a political party, the survey covered more than 30,000 voters in all the 68 constituencies in the five districts after Chiranjeevi’s maiden public meeting in Tirupati. It was limited to these districts because the actorpolitician’s impact is likely to be greatest here for a variety of reasons — ranging from the fact that influence of films on politics is more intense in the three north coastal districts, to the ‘‘son of the soil’’ factor and the preponderance of the Kapus in the Godavari districts.

As against 74 in the past, the number of segments in the five districts has dropped to 68 consequent on the delimitation exercise, and the Praja Rajyam is ahead of the others in as many as 32. District-wise, it leads in three in Srikakulam (out of a total 10), three in Vizianagaram (9), seven in Visakhapatnam (15), 11 in East Godavari (19) and 8 in West Godavari (15).

As for the Congress, it is ahead in 30 constituencies, with the districtwise break-up reading Srikakulam 6, Vizianagaram 4, Visakhapatnam 6, East Godavari 7 and West Godavari 7.

This translates to around 44 per cent of the seats as against the 71 per cent it had bagged in 2004 when the party secured as many as 53 of the then 74 seats.

It is the Telugu Desam which appears to be suffering in this belt with the party leading in only a few seats in Visakhaptnam and not expected to be a serious player in the other four districts.

What is significant is the level of support to Praja Rajyam even before Chiranjeevi’s State-wide tour set to begin this month-end. If this mood is sustained and consolidated upon, it would entail more headaches for the Congress in the five districts. But there are those who pose the vital question whether the Chiranjeevi wave would wash as far afield as the Rayalaseema and Telangana regions.

Many analysts believe that the new scenario would belie the historical one of the Godavari districts setting the trend for the rest of the State. It is the ‘‘son of the soil’’ factor working heavily in favour of Chiranjeevi in the Godavari districts which had in the past voted decisively either for the Congress or TDP in the absence of any local factor.Moreover, in the Telangana region, there will be a new element in play — the possible tie-up between the Telugu Desam and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

The Congress had benefited hugely in 2004 because of its alliance with TRS. The combine had bagged more than 80 out of the then 107 seats in the region (the number of seats has now gone up to 119 of the total 294 in the State).

The combined force of the TDP, with a strong base in Telangana, and the TRS with its emotive slogan, could press the Congress hard here too.

As of now, the scenario in the four south coastal districts — Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore and the four in Rayalaseema, seems not to markedly favour any of the major contenders.

All in all, an interesting battle is in the offing in 2009.

Chiru needs some big mouths

Both congress and TDP not leaving any available opportunity to criticize prajarajyam party now a days. Congress in a strategic step deputed Mareppa and he is perfectly carrying his job mouthing off at PRP and Chiru quite frequently, as he is dalith other parties are finding it difficult to attack him in the same aggression. Though initially TDP maintained some silence for political reasons, when mass migration started from their party, unable to control their ire they too delegated the job to big mouthed Nagam.

Both Mithra and Prabhakar, PRP official representatives, are very decent in their criticism which is not appreciated by their own cadre.

It is learnt now they too thinking of allowing some of their seasoned politicians who can match both Mareppa and Nagam in the use of right language to attack Congress and TDP.

It is surprising Chiru is yet to recognize the ability of Hari Ramajogayya who has used all kinds of unparliamentarily words when in congress against his own party members. Now if entrusted the work of attacking the opposing groups he can infuse some aggression to the attack and make the cadre happy.

PRP should know that the success of a politician depends on recognizing the abilities of his party members and entrusting the right task to them rather than depending on some intellectuals who are experts in analyzing the things theoretically and shy away in using harsh language.

Praja Rajyam party founder president Chiranjeevi seems to be a confused man with regard to national politics.

He says his party would follow Tamil Nadu model in joining the alliances at the national level. "I will join that alliance that would benefit the State more. In Tamil Nadu, political parties choose their alliances at the national level, only after ascertaining to what extent the alliance would benefit that State," he pointed out.

That does not mean, Chiru is not clear whether his party would join the BJP-led NDA or Congress-led UPA or the Left parties-led third front. As the head of a political party, he should take a clear stand – whether he would join the secular front or the communal forces. As long as he does not give any clarity, it would be difficult for him to choose his partners. Come out of this confusion, Chiru!

Kin of key TD leaders join PR

Close relatives of two important Telugu Desam leaders - Errabelli Dayakar Rao, MP, and the party’s deputy leader in the Assembly Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Tuesday joined Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam (PR).

Those who threw in their lot with Chiranjeevi were E. Pradeep Rao of Warangal and Y. Venkat Rao and his son Rajesh from East Godavari district. Several other leaders from the two districts also joined the new party.

Fielding questions after meeting the PR president, Mr. Pradeep Rao said he had always been a fan of the actor and impressed by his ideas, he was joining the party to serve people. “I am not here with an application seeking ticket,” he said. “I am here on my own and prepared to do whatever the party president asks me to do,” he repeated.

When asked about political aspirations, Mr. Venkat Rao repled that while he himself would not contest from anywhere, he was joining the party only in support of his son, who was an aspirant from East Godavari district.

Chiranjeevi to be CM, hints Mitra

In less than 24 hours, Chiranjeevi’s managers contradicted the film actor who said he would not mind making a Dalit the chief minister.

When reporters asked for an elaboration on the actor’s comment, party spokesperson Dr Mithra said in unambiguous terms that Chiranjeevi would be the chief minister. Answering a question regarding the entry into Praja Rajyam of members of families of leaders belonging to other parties, Mithra stated that being a member of a political family did not become a criterion for disqualification. Such individuals were independent and had the right to chose a party of their choice, he added.

Meanwhile, TDP MP E Dayakar Rao’s brother E Pradip and MLA Y Ramakrishnudu’s elder brother Y Venkata Rao joined Chiru’s party today. Pradip said he was ready to contest against his brother if the party instructed, while Venkata Rao said his son would contest against his uncle if the party so desired.
