Custom-built van for Chiru

Even as the Praja Rajyam Party (PR) managers are busy finalising the finer details of the party president Chiranjeevi’s road shows, the ‘ratham’ to take him to people is getting ready at a workshop specialising in fabricating such vehicles on the outskirts of the city.

Contrary to expectations that it would be a hi-tech, gadget-equipped set of wheels, it appears to be just a light commercial vehicle converted into something that will effectively serve as a moving dais for the leader on short-haul drives.

Modifications

Built on a cabin and chassis of an Eicher Mitsubishi 1095 costing Rs. 7.65 lakh, the workers at Real Cars Auto Garage added some custom-built modifications. Managing Director of the garage, M.N.V. Ravindra Babu, said the additions included a raised platform and an air-conditioned cabin with three comfort seats, at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh extra.

The raised platform can take the weight of at least five people, including the leader, for whom there is a small, collapsible step a foot higher. Also in place is a high-end sound system with 10 speakers designed to carry Mr. Chiranjeevi’s voice across to audiences in a 200-metre radius.

Suspense hangs

The veil of secrecy that surrounds anything and everything has also interestingly been extended to this workshop.

The ‘ratham’ has been given two coats of white paint over a week ago and the fabricators are awaiting word as to the words that are to be inscribed, as to the name of the ‘ratham’. Only a day ago, party managers are said to have asked the garage to have a sticker affixed, depicting the ‘sun’ with blazing rays, the symbol of the Praja Rajyam.

Praja Rajyam to test waters in local elections

In what could be its first litmus test in electoral politics after its grand formation in Tirupati on August 26, Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam party is all set to contest the ZPTC and the MPTC by-elections to be held in the second week of October.

But, the catch is that its candidates may not get an official election symbol and they may be contesting as independents since the party’s registration process with the Election Commission is yet to be formalised.

The district administration is holding the by-elections to two ZPTCs and four MPTCs in next three weeks.

The Allagadda ZPTC seat fell vacant after the death of its member V Adenna, a Telugu Desam candidate, while the Aluru seat fell vacant as Masala Eranna, who won on the Congress ticket, resigned after he fell out with local minister M Mareppa. Sources said the Prajarajyam is keen to wrest both the two seats.

Allagadda natives former MP Bhuma Nagi Reddy and his wife Shobha Reddy, who have joined the Prajarajyam, have already begun moves to pitchfork their staunch follower Adenna’s son Ramana from Alladadda. Ramana has joined the Prajarajyam party recently.

“The time has come for us to show our strength in the constituency by winning the seat with a huge majority,” a close associate of Nagi Reddy told media on Thursday.

But, sources said that both the Congress and the TDP are also attaching equal importance to the seat.

The bypoll for the Aluru ZPTC seat may turn out to be key for Eranna, who has also joined the Prajarajyam. “The election will be interesting since Mareppa, Eranna and MLC Padmaja of TDP are vying for honours,” an insider close to Padmaja said.

A political analyst said this poll could be the dress rehearsals for the next general elections, which might see triangular contests in Kurnool district.

Megastar Chiranjeevi wows Muslims

Obviously with an intent to win the hearts of Muslims, film actor and Praja Rajya Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi on Thursday visited the 750-year-old Baba Fakhruddin Saharwadi dargah here and took part in Daawate- Iftar (Iftar party) as hundreds of youths both Muslims and Hindus thronged the place to have a closer at him.

Wearing the namaz ki topi (cap worn by Muslims while offering prayers), Chiranjeevi arrived at the dargah at about 6.15 pm and went inside the place where he joined Muslims in offering prayers. After spending about 15 minutes, he came out. By then, there was a huge crowd, comprising mostly youth, who had rushed to the dargah from nearby villages.

Chiranjeevi walked out of the dargah and went on to the dais erected in a vast expanse of land outside. As the actor was climbing the dais, youth jostled with one another to climb the dais, making it difficult for the organisers to keep them at bay. Later, Chiranjeevi said, “I am really a lucky man to visit this place. I will do my best to bring back the past glory to the dargah.” He said he was moved by the overwhelming response from the people and added he would work with commitment to address their problems. He recalled how the Muslim community had showered affection on him even when he was a child. “When I was a child, my teacher was a Muslim. That gave me an opportunity to interact with Muslims quite often and they used to love me,” he said.

SEZ-hit ryots get Chiru's sympathy

Scores of farmers affected by the Pharma Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Polepalli and two villages nearby today staged a daylong "Bhoosatyagraha" at the venue demanding that the State Government return their land.

Of the 1,000 acres acquired by the State Government in 2002, only 155 acres were earmarked for the Pharma SEZ and the remaining land still lies unutilised.

Praja Rajyam Party founder Chiranjeevi is likely to visit Polepalli tomorrow to express solidarity with the SEZ victims.

Today, the protesters — including several women belonging to Polepalli, Gundlagadda tanda and Mudireddipalle—came to the SEZ around 11:00 a.m. and staged a dharna till the evening.

"We are only demanding the return of the remaining 845 acres which have not been utilised so far," Polepalli SEZ Vyatireka Ikya Sanghatana (PSVIS) convener Madhu Kagula told to this website's newspaper.

According to him, the State Government acquired 1,000 acres in 2002 from 320 farmers to set up an SEZ, which was notified in November 2006. Some farmers who lost their lands to the SEZ are working as labourers in the companies that are being set up on the land, but tragically nearly 42 have died over the last six years due to hardship from unemployment, compounded by delay in receipt of compensation.

TDP ,Cong in Spot, Telangana leaders Join PRP

After his first meet with people in Tirupathi launching the party, Chiranjeevi was silent to critics, he had not said a word against Rajasekhar, Roja or any Other film personalities or on Cong oand TDP. During his surprise visit to Sirisilla, he was silent and acted as a keen observer, he questioned the successive governments, for which there are no satisfactory answers till date. How ever his questions made others to change their stance and to launch personal allegations.

His visit created flutter in Cong and TDP that government came forward in reaching out to hand weavers and YSR went into defensive reciprocating with the steps he had taken.

On Telangana issues during a debate TRS Harish Rao could not reply to PRP’s Vidhyadhar Rao.

Finance Minister Rosaiah categorically said that people will ignore the voices of TDP and TRS but that of Chiranjeevi’s will be noted. D Srinivas from congress came forward and said that the issues are on Centre’s table for implementing a solution. Political analyst say that since Chiru is picking authentic issues, issues that are neglected like land reforms to Sez, Corruption , Irregularities on Projects the TDP and Cong are defensive and are currently augmenting the solutions to answer back Chiru.

While TDP and CONG are formulating ways to reply Chiru, They received a major jolt as many leaders join Chiru from telangana.. Ex Deputy president of TRS Rawoof Jameel, Dr Rafee, Karimnagar District TRS secretary C Rajesh, State legal Cell Secretary M Chakrapani, SC cell Deputy President Jangama Swamy, K Lakshmi Raju, P Sekar, Sudarshan, Adilabad BJP additional president Thummala Narayan Reddy Industrialist Md. Pasha, Muslim Rights and reservations President Dr Sheik, KhajaVali, Kakatiya Students leader Pheroz khan, Trade Union leader V Nageshwar Rao joined PRP.

Chiru: 'I am not like those leaders'

Praja Rajyam chief Chiru who met the people affected by Polepally Special Economic Zone has promised to solve their problems. He said that he is not like those leaders who come and go without doing anything. He said the poor people are hurt by taking over their lands.

He asked them to wait for some time for better atmosphere. He commented that the poor peoples’ sacrifices are making the rich richer.

Is Chiru hitting at the right spot? So far there was not much trouble for the government on the SEZ front. The State tops in the SEZ list in the country. How will the YS Rajasekhara Reddy government will face the new menace as the elections are round the corner, the government cannot risk its reputation, rather it will but some burning issues in the backburner.

Chiru PRP rules out truck with any coalition

A day after his party announced its willingness to forge ties with other parties, Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi, however, ruled out joining any coalition in the State in the next elections.

“We never said we are against alliances with other like-minded parties, but the PR will not be a part of any coalition,” he said.

The statement assumes significance in the light of the efforts by the Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary K. Narayana to bring the PR, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Left parties together as an alternative to the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party.

In an informal chat with reporters here on Wednesday after releasing a book on Jyothirao Phule authored by K. Padma Rao, Mr. Chiranjeevi said though the party was not averse to alliances, it was too early to think about them at this juncture. Indicating that the situation was fluid, he said there was still no clarity as to which way the situation would turn.

Mr. Chiranjeevi said his meeting with Dr. Narayana a couple of days ago was aimed at exchanging views on the national and State political situation and “we did not discuss anything about the alliances.” Replying to queries, he said there was no indication from the TRS for an alliance and the PR would take an appropriate decision “once there is movement from that side.” “Moreover, we have not attained a level of maturity where we can give a positive or negative response to the proposals for tie-ups,” he admitted.

Tie-up options open: Chiru

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi on Wednesday made it clear that his party would strike alliances with like-minded parties in the next elections.

Speaking to reporters at a book release function at the party office here today, he said he will not be able to say now with which party he would sail.

"There is still a lot of time to think about alliances. We would make our decision depending on developments in future," he said.

He made it clear that his party would not join the Grand Alliance (Maha Kutami), which is in the making at present, but would try to build its own front. He said committees would be formed to study Telangana and other issues.

Reacting to a question whether his party would fight along with the CPI on Polepally SEZ issue, PRP president said he would like to have a look at the issue on his own first.

PRP threatens to stall Metro Rail

The Praja Rajyam has threatened to launch an agitation if the State Government fails to come out with proper clarifications on the issues raised by Delhi Metro managing director E Sreedharan.

Talking with reporters here today, party spokesman Mithra said it was surprising that the government was going ahead with such a huge plan without discussing it with people. If it goes ahead further, we will stop the work," he warned.

"Sreeharan is regarded as one of the 50 best administrators in the world and if he raises a doubt, there would definitely be some substance in it. Instead of respecting his critisism the government has brought pressure on him and got the deal with Delhi Metro cancelled." He said his party firmly believed that a huge project like Hyderabad Metro was not feasible on the ‘build, operate, transfer’ (BOT) basis. The Mumbai Metro, taken up by the Reliance, was facing problems, he said .

"There is no information on how the construction company would raise money. It is not possible to complete the project within the stated time.

If the company leaves the project midway, it will become a white elephant for the State Governement."

Chiranjeevi Will Be Silent Winner

It appears that Megastar Chiranjeevi has become a strict follower of the saying by Lord Buddha –'Silence is Golden'. After having come into politics, he is being targeted for every small reason and those who used to die to be on his side on the screen or even took pride to be seen with him outside are now shamelessly hitting out at him without a cause.

However, all these things don't seem to matter much as Chiru has been silent over all the mud slinging and is going on doing his work. It was the same mantra that he had adopted in the film career that took him to envious heights. His idea of remaining calm over such things and just focus on the task on the hand has got him a lot of success.

Now, he is following the same principle in politics and there are many of his supporters who say that it is this stand that will ensure that he will also become the Chief Minister and will get him great success in this dangerous and murky field. Let us wait and see how true all this turns out to be.

Second-rung leaders are PR’s strength

Praja Rajyam (PR)leader Bhuma Nagireddy said second-rung leaders are the strength of the party. Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said there is good response from the political activists who are not power-hungry leaders but want to see the party in power.

He said there is no dearth of leadership in the party as is being projected in some quarters. He said able leaders are available for the party in each and every constituency. Many leaders from different parties are in touch with the party and are waiting for an opportunity to switch over, he said.

Mr. Nagireddy said political parties in the State were stirred out of slumber after the visit of Chiranjeevi to Siricilla as part of his study of weavers’ problems. Why the parties enjoying power and those which had enjoyed in the past failed to react to the misery of weavers, he questioned.

Mr. Nagireddy was critical of the TDP saying its president is making mindless promises which are impracticable to implement. As former Chief Minister of the State, he should have thought of its financial implications, he said.

He said farmers are facing serious problems due to shortage of fertilizer in the district. The problem had cropped up due to faulty distribution system, he said, adding Congress would have to pay a heavy price.

On the social justice, Mr. Nagireddy said the party will spring a surprise to all parties with its innovative ideas.

Nadu – Nedu: Insane Roja

egFurther to this article here is the proof that ‘current politicians’ are bad irrespective their level of civilization. This is what we would like Chiranjeevi to bring change for New Era for the Clean Politics.
Roja might have got good points worth the MLA seat for her, but to know what Roja is hit the video and draw your conclusions.

Political scenario turns unclear in AP

The nebulous political scenario in the state has given rise to rank opportunism, with perhaps, except for the Congress, every party is in talks with every other party for forging an alliance for the 2009 general and assembly elections.

Leading the pack is Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), who on Tuesday indicated that he is putting together a grand alliance comprising the TRS, the Prajarajyam of Chiranjeevi and the two Left parties. At the same time, both TRS and Telugu Desam Party sources have indicated that they are in talks with each other with regard to an alliance.

“While TRS and TDP are ready to sew up a deal, there is an opposition from the rank and file of the former in Telangana. They want a clear enunciation of the Telanagana policy from TDP. What is more they also want to assess who is more stronger - TDP or Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam,” a political analyst said.

While the CPM is toying with the idea of sailing with the TDP, the CPI is keeping its options open. Denying that the party has struck any alliance with the TRS as was claimed by KCR two days ago, CPI state secretary K Narayana said on Tuesday that he had met KCR and also Chiranjeevi on the issue of alliance but that nothing had as yet been finalised. The two Left parties are scheduled to hold a joint meeting on Wednesday to discuss their options.

Prajarajyam Party spokesperson P Mitra confirmed on Tuesday that a meeting did take place between Chiranjeevi and Narayana on September 21 but that only views were exchanged on various issues. “The PRP is ready to join the CPI in agitations on common issues but no poll alliances have been discussed or finalised,” he said.

The present hazy situation would clear a little bit by the middle of October, by when the Telugu Desam Party is expected to announce its Telangana policy and the fate of Prajarajyam will be a little more clear. “For its political survival, the TDP would have no option but to announce a pro-Telangana policy and go for a tie-up with either TRS or the Nava Telangana Praja Party of T Devender Goud. Chiranjeevi too would have to go for a similar tie up with a Telangana regional party. Who ties up with whom will depend on the number of seats asked and given,” said one leader.

The two Left parties appear to be going in different directions at present, with the CPM threatening to sail with the TDP and the CPI indicating its preference for Chiranjeevi.
Only the Congress, being politically isolated at present, seems to be blissfully saved of this excruciating exercise. However, analysts do not rule out a sudden shift in the party on the Telangana issue which would make even more interesting the run up to the next year’s polls.

Third Front in the State – as an alternative to Congress and TDP

In a new development, CPI State Secretary K Narayana met Chiranjeevi a couple of days ago and discussed the issue of alliances. This meet has been confirmed by Narayana as well as Praja Rajyam spokesperson Dr. Mithra.

Apparently CPI is taking the lead in bringing together opposition parties to forge a third front as an alternative to Congress and Telugu Desam Party. Mr. Narayana while talking to reporters in Tirupati said his party would believe that there is a need to build a third front in the state and mentioned that the talks with Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party would continue further. He also denied the reports about differences between CPI and CPM on electoral strategies and said both the Left parties would work together on common issues.

While CPM has been giving indications of an alliance with the TDP, the CPI has been pursuing the Third Front line and trying to rope in Praja Rajyam and Telanagana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Meanwhile, Praja Rajyam spokesperson Dr. Mithra told reporters today that they are open for poll alliances with other parties that support the Praja Rajyam Ideology. However he conveyed that it is too early to discuss about alliances for now. Dr. Mithra once again reiterated that Praja Rajyam is is the only alternative to the ruling Congress.

Chiru Praja Prasthanam – Starts with Weavers meeting at Siricilla

Chiranjeevi started his Praja Prasthanam (in case if you do not know the meaning of Prasthanam, it means Journey) today 20 September at Siricilla, Karimnagar district in Telangana and met families of weavers who had committed suicide due to financial distress. A large number of people gathered to giving traction to his political entry, amid tight security.

After a brief visit to the textile park, he called on three families whose bread-earners had committed suicide due to debts. Chiranjeevi sat on the floor along with the poor weavers and inquired about their problems. The families poured out their woes and narrated how the successive governments have failed to address their grievances. The weavers told him that they were fast losing hope in the absence of credit and marketing facilities, and employment opportunities.

Later addressing the huge gathering, Chiranjeevi said he was deeply moved by the troubles of weavers and vowed to work for the improvement of their living standards. And assured that the next government will be ‘people rule’ (Praja Rajyam) where people would be able to decide government agenda.

“Gandhiji had once said that handloom weaving will usher in a revolution but today it is unfortunate that weavers are forced to end their lives,” he said, adding that Sircilla had become synonymous with suicides.

The actor promised that if voted to power his party would ensure that weavers from Sircilla don’t have to migrate to other states and other countries for jobs.

Chiranjeevi state tour to begin on 2 October

Chiranjeevi is thinking to start the state wide tour on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanthi. Apparently Chiranjeevi started the Blood Bank, which is a big success, started on 2 October. During this tour Chiranjeevi would participate in Roadshows to get to know the people problems. The information collected from the people would be used as the basis for the agenda of Praja Rajyam party.

How to join Chiranjeevi Party

Joining Chiranjeevi party is very simple, just goto the geetha Arts Office at road no. 4, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. At the reception the forms are available to fill your details, address and phone number. You need to return the filled form at the reception itself. The filled details are then fed into computer database. After the party announcement you may get a call to work for the party. That’s all.

Shobha criticises Naidu for using Roja to attack Chiru

The Praja Rajyam president, Chiranjeevi, has adopted the Telugu Desam president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu’s tactic of firing salvos at political rivals using selected leaders. And the first target of this attack by Chiranjeevi’s party was none other than the TD supremo himself. The former TD leader, Ms Shobha Nagi Reddy, who joined the Praja Rajyam on Monday lashed out at Mr Naidu for using film actor Roja to attack the megastar-turned-politician.

It may be recalled here that Roja, the TD Mahila Wing leader and former heroine of Chiranjeevi, criticised him saying that he had entered politics solely to gain power and was motivated by self-interest. She had said that Chiranjeevi had never helped anyone in the film industry while he was the superstar.

Retorting sharply to Roja’s comments on Chiranjeevi, Ms Shobha Nagi Reddy said that the TD chief was conducting a competition among his party functionaries on who would criticise rivals the best. "He is using Assembly tickets as bait and this is nothing but political bankruptcy," she added. This was the first time that a leader other than the party spokesperson had held a press conference at the PR headquarters. On the other hand, Chiranjeevi refused to react to the critical comments made by the Congress and the TD on his Siricilla tour by saying that he would not respond to personal attacks.

"As I was moved by the hardships of the weavers in Siricilla during my recent visit, I questioned the lackadaisical attitude of the government and local MLA towards the plight of the weavers," he said. He has also set up a committee under the chairmanship of Mr K.S.R. Murthy to study the problems of the weavers. The megastar said he had not yet decided when to launch his state-wide tour. "I was thinking of beginning my yatra in the first week of October," he said. "But, some of our party leaders are suggesting that I take it up after the Dasara festival."

Chiru’s tour of districts in october first week

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi would embark on his much awaited districts tour in the first week of next month. The exact date would be announced in a day or two, Chiranjeevi told reporters here on monday.

"The tour would be planned keeping in view of the Dusserah and Dipavali festivals. We do not want to disturb the festival mood. I would tour three districts in five or six days and will give a break before the commencement of the next leg of the tour," the actor said.

Chiranjeevi appointed former member of parliament KSR Murty as chairman of a committee which would study the problems of the weavers in the State with a special focus on the Siricilla weavers, whom he visited few days ago. The committee would submit its report within a week and its suggestions would be incorporated in the party manifesto.

Meanwhile, sharing his Siricilla experiences, Chiranjeevi said that the conditions of weavers were appalling and they were not getting any benefits from the Government’s schemes, especially the power loom weavers. The suicides of the weavers still continue, he said.

Reacting to the comments made by TD MLA Ch Rajeswara Rao, the star said that his intention was not to hurt the eminent leader, but the conditions at Siricilla were compelling.

He said that he had great respect toward the veteran communist leader.

The PRP office bustled with activity today with the visit of hundreds of followers of the film actor from Ananthapur, Warangal, Adilabad districts.

Chiranjeevi Dalitha Sena

Andhra Pradesh Chiranjeevi Dalitha SenaState President Mr Lankapalli Ramesh, has appointed Mr Jama Dasarathram, social worker and Secretary of Rashtra Aikya Seva Samithi (RISS), asState Chiranjeevi Dalitha Sena Secretary and in-charge of MahaboobnagarDistrict.

In a press statement here today, Mr Dasarathram stated that he would work to take the ideals and objectives of PrajaRajyam Party (PRP) to the people of the State in general, and theDaliths, Women and youth in particular, and bring an awakening amongthem. He said he would shortly tour all the Assembly constituencies ofMahaboobnagar District and nominate Mandal and village level committeesto render service to the people. He would also organise social welfareactivities like conduct of health camps, drinking water camps, etc., andtry to solve the problems of the people.

Praja flock to Rajyam

Several senior leaders from different parties are joining the Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in the district. BJP senior leader Manda Ailaiah, who has been in the party since its inception, joined the Praja Rajyam. He said that he was vexed with the "anti-BC" policies of the BJP and was impressed by the social agenda of the actor’s party. He said that though he contested from the Shayampet constituency for three times, every time he was betrayed by the former MP C. Janga Reddy’s camp, which he said was opposed to the BC candidate contesting against former minister Madadi Satyanarayana Reddy.

Taking a massive convoy of around 100 vehicles from the district, Mr Ailaiah went to Hyderabad and had joined the party. Impressed by Chiranjeevi’s initiatives like blood bank, eye bank and other social service activities, noted children’s specialist doctor N. Sheshu Madhav too joined the Praja Rajyam.

He said that he would take the social service and BC agenda of the actor further by working full time for the promotion of the party. Similarly, the National Minimum Wages Commission former chairman Jannu Jakaraiah also entered the Praja Rajyam. He alleged that though he worked for the strengthening of the TRS in the district from the day one, the TRS chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, betrayed him by denying ticket to contest from the Parkal (SC) constituency.

For more than three decades he worked for the CPI and later joined the TRS and worked as a close associate of Hanamkonda MP B. Vinod Kumar. Mr Jakaraiah was the only leader who was shared the dais with Chiranjeevi at the party office when joined the party.

The Life Line Hospital founder, Dr N. Laxmi Prasad too joined the party and has been conducting free medical camps in all the rural areas of the Narsampet constituency from where he plans to contest.

Chiranjeevi's heroines now turn rivals

They romanced Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi in reel life but have been spitting venom on him in real life.
Actresses-turned-politicians-Vijaya Santhi and R K Roja are now apparently leaving no occasion to lash out at Chiranjeevi, who launched his Praja Rajyam Party last month.
Vijaya Santhi paired with Chiranjeevi in 18 films, the maximum any heroine has done with him, while Roja starred in two films opposite the Telugu megastar.
After having sailed with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for many years, Vijaya Santhi floated her own political outfit Talli Telangana Party a couple of years ago espousing the separate statehood cause.
Roja is now heading Telugu Mahila, the women’s wing of Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Both have been taking a dig at Chiranjeevi ever since he jumped into active politics by launching his own party.
"How can one expect a man, who has done nothing for the welfare of the film industry workers, to work for the welfare of the people at large," wondered Roja, firing her first salvo at Chiranjeevi soon after he formally made his political entry.
Vijaya Santhi, on the other hand, took a dig at the megastar for failing to come out with a clear stand on the Telangana issue. "He is trying to hoodwink people on Telangana," she had said.
After Chiranjeevi undertook his first mass contact programme by meeting handloom weavers in Sircilla on Saturday, Roja unleashed a fresh round of attack on the former by dubbing the trip as a mere vote-garnering exercise.
"Chiranjeevi has never aided people in times of natural disasters like tsunami, cyclones or bomb blasts. He's now shedding crocodile tears over the plight of weavers," Roja said addressing a gathering of Telugu Yuvatha workers and IT professionals at the TDP office yesterday.
Around the same time, Vijaya Santhi was also making snide remarks against the Praja Rajyam Party chief saying he is a rank junior to me in politics. "Don't compare me to him," she said.
"People of Telangana would not trust Chiranjeevi's words as he lacked sincerity," she said and cautioned him not to take people of the region for granted.
While verbal attacks from other political leaders are obvious, the Praja Rajyam Party leader also has to contend with the diatribe from his erstwhile colleagues in the film industry.
Besides Roja and Vijaya Santhi, notable Chiranjeevi critics in the film industry are actor Rajasekhar and his actress-turned-director wife Jeevita and producer Tammareddi Bharadwaja.
Bharadwaja produced two films with Chiranjeevi in his early years as an actor while Rajasekhar did a cameo in a Chiranjeevi film. Rajasekhar and Jeevita have recently joined the Congress party in the state.
Meanwhile, for now, the Praja Rajyam camp is maintaining a calculated silence on the criticism.

Chiru to meet people displaced by projects

Enthused by the huge response he received from the weavers of Sircilla, Prajarajyam president Chiranjeevi is looking at 'project-affected persons' (PAP) as his next target audience.

"People affected by SEZ in Mahbubnagar district, tribals being uprooted by the bauxite mining in Vizag area and fishermen facing the threat of evacuation to make way for coastal corridors. Chiranjeevi wants to meet all these sections to know the dark side of the so-called development in the state, " sources told.

"Though the suicide of farmers and weavers is a serious matter, the plight of the project-affected persons is equally a serious one. Even though some NGOs are working to help them, political parties have not been able to visualise the true dimension of the PAP," the sources said. As of now there are nearly 10 lakh people facing the threat of evacuation due to various projects and "the compensation is meagre. Rehabilitation is either not taken up or is tardy, and above all the cultural shock they received due to uprooting is immense," the sources said.

Party spokesman P Prabhakar said PRP would not indulge in abusing other political parties but would instead go directly to the suffering masses. It would not only understand their problems but come out with alternative plans to improve their lives.

Among other issues, chronic fluoride problem in Nalgonda districts also finds place in the priority list of the star. Apart from these familiarisation trips to problematic regions in the state, "The star is particular about visiting the church in the Medak town and the famous Pedda Masjid in Kadapa," the sources added.

Chiranjeevi: The Student

Chiranjeevi is burning the midnight oil to pore over books on political science, the Indian Constitution and public administration to prepare for his new role as a politician.
The actor, who has enacted many a character in reel life, may never have taken such pains for any portrayal. But then this is the meatiest role he has ever got.

According to aides, the Praja Rajyam chief is also reading up on all the burning issues of the state, including categorisation of scheduled castes, Naxalism, farmers' suicides and price rise to keep abreast of all major developments. Mr Chiranjeevi, who is on a statewide tour, apparently wants to deliver speeches with as much substance as style, something which his scriptwriters often forget to do in films.

"He is thoroughly examining every problem being faced by the common man," said an aide. "He is not just analysing the problem, but is also taking advice from experts to find solutions." To formulate pro-poor policies for his party, the actor is also going through the election manifestos of different political parties.

"He is committed to the uplift of the downtrodden," said Ms Shobha Nagi Reddy, former Telugu Desam leader who joined the Praja Rajyam." "He is very keen on understanding the travails of the poor." Chiranjeevi struck a chord with the people during the Tirupati launch of his party by speaking about his lower middle-class upbringing. But to carry forward the momentum, he has to strike a chord in terms of his approach to issues as well. This means some rote learning to digest key facts and figures. And nobody needs to teach the actor how to weave them into his dialogues to give it that solid punch.

Chiru's Casting Call For 'Praja Rajyam'

Megastar Chiranjeevi who has now got into the groove of formulating the manifesto and hierarchy of his Praja Rajyam party has announced that he is impressed with the Tamilnadu style of functioning in the parties when it comes to forming alliances. He said that they would form an alliance depending on how it would benefit the state and its people instead of themselves.

Meanwhile, he has also started chalking out plans for his yatra likely to commence this month end and in this process he wants to establish coordinating committees before his arrival and this should have a minimum of hundred members to be known as a committee. Amongst them, a three member group will be chosen as the representatives for that particular committee and they will be known as a co-ordination committee.

Finally, he said that a proper background check would be done on those who are aspiring for posts in the party and has dropped curtains on a possible alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Given his set of conditions, it remains to be seen who will fit the bill of his casting and take forward the story has begun with the megastar.

Gandhigiri: The new mantra of Chiranjeevi

Megastar Chiranjeevi has thrashed many a villain in reel life, but he will be adopting a non-confrontationist Gandhigiri style in his political life. In fact, Chiranjeevi had played a role in popularising Gandhigiri in the state through his film Shankar Dada Zindabad, a remake of the popular Munnabhai MBBS.
It is known that the Praja Rajyam chief has been going through books of self-help gurus such as Stephen R. Covey, Norman Vincent Peale and Dale Carnegie to teach his party workers a non-confrontationist problem-solving approach in political matters. Even if the Praja Rajyam leaders come under attack from political rivals, the party would exercise utmost restraint while responding.
"Chiranjeevi wants to establish moral standards in the political system," said the Praja Rajyam spokesperson, Mr Parakala Prabhakar. The rule is applicable to everyone and this was impressed upon Rayalaseema strongman Bhuma Nagi Reddy.
"Even Tammineni Sitaram was given a lecture on non violence when he joined," said a close aide of Chiranjeevi. Chiranjeevi will not wear Khadi to advertise his Gandhism and will continue to don his customary white shirt and black trousers. "You won’t find any change in my attire. I want to go to the public with my normal dress," Chiranjeevi told this correspondent.

Major parties vie to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day

Leaders of various political parties vied with each other to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Hyderabad State in Telangana region.

The Congress, Left parties, TRS, Telugu Desam Party, Lok Satta Party besides the newly launched Praja Rajyam organised separate programmes where they honoured freedom fighters. Unlike in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the State government did not organise any official programme in spite of the demand by various parties that it should celebrate the occasion.

It was on this day in 1948 that Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union following a military operation, also known as “police action” ordered by then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, surrendered to the Indian Army after initially refusing to accede to the Indian Union for 13 months when India attained independence from British rule.

Propriety questioned

At a joint public meeting to commemorate the Telangana Armed Struggle against the Nizam, the CPI and CPI(M) questioned the propriety of other mainstream political parties celebrating the event and said it was obviously to gain political mileage.

CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu said the BJP had no reason to celebrate, especially in the present circumstances when its cadre attacked Christians in Orissa and Karnataka. CPI State secretary K. Narayana said these parties had no connection whatsoever with events while the BJP even claimed that the day symbolised the triumph of the struggle by people against the Nizam-led Muslims.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), on the other hand, praised the Nizam, who patronised the land owning class against whom the Communists waged a relentless struggle which resulted in the death of 4,000 people.

The Deshmukhs, Patels and Patwaris who constituted the feudal lords in Nizam’s rule cut across religious lines.

Freedom fighters feted

At Gandhi Bhavan, APCC president D. Srinivas hoisted the national flag and felicitated freedom fighters – M. S. Rajalingam, Paga Pulla Reddy, Mydam Ramachandraiah, K. Prem Raj Yadav, V.R.Ramachary and S. Raghuveer Rao.

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi was present at the hoisting of the national flag in the party office by a freedom fighter Narayan Rao Pawar who was said to be a follower of Ravi Narayan Reddy, the doyen of the Telangana Armed Struggle. Chiranjeevi said the party would accord the status of ‘Independence Day’ to September 17 if it came to power.

Historic event

The Telugu Desam observed the historic event with the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu unfurling the national flag and honouring seven freedom fighters, Narayan Rao Pawar, B. Sridhar, Parsa Satyanarayana, Mallu Swarajyam, N. Srinivas Reddy, Pitchi Reddy and Ch. Rajeswara Rao.

The TRS, the Lok Satta Party, the Freedom Fighters Forum For Social Justice observed the Hyderabad State Liberation and Arya Pratinidhi Sabha which was in the forefront of the struggle, also organised celebrations.

Chiru forcing T party?

In the wake of the advent of Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam, and given the likelihood of a tie-up between the Telugu Desam and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh has its work cut out in the 2009 elections According to a latest survey, the party is facing a serious dent in its support in the three north coastal and the twin Godavari districts following the launching of Praja Rajyam, which is tipped to do well in all these districts — Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, East and West Godavari.

Conducted by an independent agency for a political party, the survey covered more than 30,000 voters in all the 68 constituencies in the five districts after Chiranjeevi’s maiden public meeting in Tirupati. It was limited to these districts because the actorpolitician’s impact is likely to be greatest here for a variety of reasons — ranging from the fact that influence of films on politics is more intense in the three north coastal districts, to the ‘‘son of the soil’’ factor and the preponderance of the Kapus in the Godavari districts.

As against 74 in the past, the number of segments in the five districts has dropped to 68 consequent on the delimitation exercise, and the Praja Rajyam is ahead of the others in as many as 32. District-wise, it leads in three in Srikakulam (out of a total 10), three in Vizianagaram (9), seven in Visakhapatnam (15), 11 in East Godavari (19) and 8 in West Godavari (15).

As for the Congress, it is ahead in 30 constituencies, with the districtwise break-up reading Srikakulam 6, Vizianagaram 4, Visakhapatnam 6, East Godavari 7 and West Godavari 7.

This translates to around 44 per cent of the seats as against the 71 per cent it had bagged in 2004 when the party secured as many as 53 of the then 74 seats.

It is the Telugu Desam which appears to be suffering in this belt with the party leading in only a few seats in Visakhaptnam and not expected to be a serious player in the other four districts.

What is significant is the level of support to Praja Rajyam even before Chiranjeevi’s State-wide tour set to begin this month-end. If this mood is sustained and consolidated upon, it would entail more headaches for the Congress in the five districts. But there are those who pose the vital question whether the Chiranjeevi wave would wash as far afield as the Rayalaseema and Telangana regions.

Many analysts believe that the new scenario would belie the historical one of the Godavari districts setting the trend for the rest of the State. It is the ‘‘son of the soil’’ factor working heavily in favour of Chiranjeevi in the Godavari districts which had in the past voted decisively either for the Congress or TDP in the absence of any local factor. Moreover, in the Telangana region, there will be a new element in play — the possible tie-up between the Telugu Desam and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

The Congress had benefited hugely in 2004 because of its alliance with TRS. The combine had bagged more than 80 out of the then 107 seats in the region (the number of seats has now gone up to 119 of the total 294 in the State).

The combined force of the TDP, with a strong base in Telangana, and the TRS with its emotive slogan, could press the Congress hard here too.

As of now, the scenario in the four south coastal districts — Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore and the four in Rayalaseema, seems not to markedly favour any of the major contenders.

All in all, an interesting battle is in the offing in 2009.

Chiru needs some big mouths

Both congress and TDP not leaving any available opportunity to criticize prajarajyam party now a days. Congress in a strategic step deputed Mareppa and he is perfectly carrying his job mouthing off at PRP and Chiru quite frequently, as he is dalith other parties are finding it difficult to attack him in the same aggression. Though initially TDP maintained some silence for political reasons, when mass migration started from their party, unable to control their ire they too delegated the job to big mouthed Nagam.

Both Mithra and Prabhakar, PRP official representatives, are very decent in their criticism which is not appreciated by their own cadre.

It is learnt now they too thinking of allowing some of their seasoned politicians who can match both Mareppa and Nagam in the use of right language to attack Congress and TDP.

It is surprising Chiru is yet to recognize the ability of Hari Ramajogayya who has used all kinds of unparliamentarily words when in congress against his own party members. Now if entrusted the work of attacking the opposing groups he can infuse some aggression to the attack and make the cadre happy.

PRP should know that the success of a politician depends on recognizing the abilities of his party members and entrusting the right task to them rather than depending on some intellectuals who are experts in analyzing the things theoretically and shy away in using harsh language.

I will follow Tamil Nadu model: Chiru

Praja Rajyam party founder president Chiranjeevi seems to be a confused man with regard to national politics.

He says his party would follow Tamil Nadu model in joining the alliances at the national level. "I will join that alliance that would benefit the State more. In Tamil Nadu, political parties choose their alliances at the national level, only after ascertaining to what extent the alliance would benefit that State," he pointed out.

That does not mean, Chiru is not clear whether his party would join the BJP-led NDA or Congress-led UPA or the Left parties-led third front. As the head of a political party, he should take a clear stand – whether he would join the secular front or the communal forces. As long as he does not give any clarity, it would be difficult for him to choose his partners. Come out of this confusion, Chiru!

Kin of key TD leaders join PR

Close relatives of two important Telugu Desam leaders - Errabelli Dayakar Rao, MP, and the party’s deputy leader in the Assembly Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Tuesday joined Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam (PR).

Those who threw in their lot with Chiranjeevi were E. Pradeep Rao of Warangal and Y. Venkat Rao and his son Rajesh from East Godavari district. Several other leaders from the two districts also joined the new party.

Fielding questions after meeting the PR president, Mr. Pradeep Rao said he had always been a fan of the actor and impressed by his ideas, he was joining the party to serve people. “I am not here with an application seeking ticket,” he said. “I am here on my own and prepared to do whatever the party president asks me to do,” he repeated.

When asked about political aspirations, Mr. Venkat Rao repled that while he himself would not contest from anywhere, he was joining the party only in support of his son, who was an aspirant from East Godavari district.

Staff Reporter from Kakinada adds: Meanwhile, Dantu Surya Rao, Chairman, Cocanada Chamber of Commerce and a State executive committee member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, joined the PR and addressed a press conference along with former TDP leader Vanga Geeta, who had joined the PR earlier.

Chiranjeevi to be CM, hints Mitra

The boss says one thing and his spokesperson says something diametrically opposite.

In less than 24 hours, Chiranjeevi’s managers contradicted the film actor who said he would not mind making a Dalit the chief minister.

When reporters asked for an elaboration on the actor’s comment, party spokesperson Dr Mithra said in unambiguous terms that Chiranjeevi would be the chief minister. Answering a question regarding the entry into Praja Rajyam of members of families of leaders belonging to other parties, Mithra stated that being a member of a political family did not become a criterion for disqualification. Such individuals were independent and had the right to chose a party of their choice, he added.

Meanwhile, TDP MP E Dayakar Rao’s brother E Pradip and MLA Y Ramakrishnudu’s elder brother Y Venkata Rao joined Chiru’s party today. Pradip said he was ready to contest against his brother if the party instructed, while Venkata Rao said his son would contest against his uncle if the party so desired.

Join PR, NTR family advised

The Rajya Sabha member, Mr C. Ram-achandraiah, advised the family members of N.T. Rama Rao either to launch a new party or join the Praja Rajyam established by Chiranjeevi to achieve the aims and aspirations of the late leader. Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday night, he said it was his personal opinion and the Praja Rajyam didn’t have any link with the advice.

Mr Ramachandraiah said the present Telugu Desam (TD) lacked the aspirations with which N.T. Rama Rao had started the party. The Rajya Sabha MP said the late leader had wanted that all sections of the society developed in financial, social and political spheres and a corruption-free society was formed. He said N.T. Rama Rao had started several welfare schemes in the state.

He said the present TD was not following the aspirations of the late leader and added that NTR family should introspect on their decision to support the TD. Mr Ramachandraiah said N.T. Rama Rao had started several projects in the Kadapa district and added that it would not be good for his family to be associated with a party which was not following his ideals.

Movie icons have bright future in politics

Veteran actor and Telugu Desam leader Murali Mohan, elected president of Movie Artistes’ Association (MAA), said Monday that filmdom is the future of political power. “The future of politics rests on the shoulders of the film industry. Movie artistes not only serve the masses by providing entertainment but also attend to their life’s needs as political leaders. Elections in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and distant USA have proved that matinee idols can occupy the highest political positions in a state or nation,” Mohan said.

Reacting to criticism from non-film politicians against celluloid heroes cashing in on their popularity, Mohan defended the industry with strong words.

“We may belong to different political parties but are united in tinsel town. Though many political parties depend on us for votes and gathering crowds for their meetings, they ridicule matinee idols. Challenges to our power will be met by our winning performances not only in films but in the political arena as well,” Mohan added.

Many in the industry saw the remark as an interesting spar with thespian Chiranjeevi - who launched a political party “Praja Rajyam” recently in front of a massive crowd in Tirupati and proclaimed himself a contender for the chief minister’s position in the next elections.

Significantly, Balakrishna and Junior NTR - son and grandson, respectively, of late Andhra Pradesh chief minister N.T. Ramarao - are slated to campaign for the Telugu Desam Party during the ensuing parliamentary elections.

Mohan defeated his nearest rival Vijaychander by a large margin during the elections held Sunday.

Further, Mohan’s entire team swept the polls held Sunday.

Ahuti Prasad, Srikanth and Srihari were elected general secretary and vice presidents, respectively.

Multilingual actress Ramya Krishnan has also found a place in the MAA executive committee.

Chiru mulls quota for EBCs

Economically backward classes (EBCs) in all castes can look forward to a better deal from Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam.

The new party is "seriously considering" extending reservations to these sections as part of a special package that would be given a final shape soon, Praja Rajyam founder Chiranjeevi said in an exclusive chat with Express.

Praja Rajyam is looking beyond the Constitutionally- provided reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs as it feels there is a definite need to take care of the interests of the EBCs in all castes who suffer as much as the historically recognised weaker classes such as SCs and BCs.

Asked if extending reservations to EBCs is an option that Praja Rajyam is considering, Chiranjeevi said emphatically: "We are seriously considering it though the special package is still being finalised." Reservations in AP currently account for 50 per cent with 25 per cent for BCs, SCs (15) STs (6) and Muslims (4). The Congress Government, which has extended the benefit of reservation to Muslims, however, limited it to the economically weaker sections in that community in accordance with the court orders.

Praja Rajyam, which is confident of coming to power, is also formulating specific benefits to women. "There are a lot of issues confronting women, particularly those from the middle classes, ranging from such daily essentials like availability of gas at a reasonable price to others. We are going to look into their problems and find a solution," the actor-turned-politician said.

(Party sources said Chiranjeevi will start unveiling his plans for different sections, one by one, during the course of his road shows across the State).

Chiranjeevi also sought to build bridges with Naxalites, saying his comments at his maiden public meeting in Tirupati were misunderstood. The PRP recognisies that Naxalism is indeed a socioeconomic problem and cannot be treated as a law and order issue. "I can assure you that we will not encourage methods like fake encounters," he asserted.

Without saying it in as many words, Chiranjeevi took a dig at both the previous Telugu Desam and the present Congress regime over corruption.

"Should I say that corruption is rampant? Anyone who watches Assembly proceedings will know what is happening. They (TDP and Congress) themselves are saying it, day in and day out, in the Assembly. Each party is accusing the other of indulging in corruption but neither of them is denying it," he pointed out.

Again, taking a swipe at the leaders, Chiranjeevi averred that if those at the top (at the political level) set an example, corruption would be reduced automatically though it may not be eliminated altogether.

Chiranjeevi has, no doubt whatsoever, that he will be able to connect to the people once he hits the road later this month when he launches the State-wide tour for which dates are being finalised.

In an indirect dig at those suggesting that his following was limited to youth, he said, "the fact is that even a 60-year-old farmer is looking for change." He said he could feel people’s desperation for a change from the kind of politics and policies that are currently being pursued and is sure that it would reflect once he sets out on his tour.

Chiru ready if CM is willing

Picking up the gauntlet thrown by the Congress, the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on monday agreed for a debate, as sought by the ruling party if Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was prepared, on the development of the State.

The issue came up during the press conference addressed by PRP founder Chiranjeevi at the party office when scribes asked him to react to the challenge made by Information Minister A Ramanarayana Reddy.

Initially, Chiranjeevi turned down the challenge saying that he was busy with his tour and cannot engage himself in the debates. But after a while, senior PRP leader K S R Murthy came out to announce that the party was ready for the debate. "Chiranjeevi is ready if the Chief Minister is willing but he (KSR Murthy) will answer any minister," Murthy said.

On the remarks made by film star Rajasekhar that he would not become Chief Minister, Chiranjeevi said that every person was free to express his/her views in a democratic country."Rajasekhar may be right in his own view," Chiranjeevi quipped.

He said that no politician was stopped from joining PRP and the party would use their experiences if they were prepared. However, only time will tell which positions the leaders will be given in the party, he said.

"I am studying Telangana and the SC categorisation issues and will react at an appropriate time," he clarified while referring to the remarks that the party was vacillating on such crucial issues.

He also made it clear that his tour will not begin on September 26 as speculated by a section of media and requested the media not to go by his preference for the digit 8. Whatever he did in the past like announcing his decision to join politics, addressing first meeting of the party and also hoisting the party flag was a mere coincidence.

Meanwhile, prominent Communist leader M Swarajyam’s daughter P Karuna, TD former State secretary P Brahmananda Reddy and Krishna district leader Y Ravi joined the PRP in the presence of Chiranjeevi.

Chiru ready for Dalit CM

Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi has said that if his party came to power he wouldn’t mind making way for a Dalit chief minister if the popular demand was such. On Telangana statehood, Chiranjeevi offered a special package to develop the region. “If people wish for a Dalit chief minister, I will definitely obey their wish and remain as party president,” said the megastar-turned-politician in an exclusive interview to this newspaper at the PR headquarters, where for the first time he committed himself on the Telangana issue. “But it is for the people to decide.”

The megastar said that he would give more Assembly tickets to backward classes than the Congress and the TD. “My father may be OC but my mother is BC,” he said. “She is from Balija community in Nellore district. I swear I will work for the uplift of the downtrodden people.” Chiranjeevi said he saw the Telangana issue as a “two-dimensional” problem. One involved the self-respect of the people of the region and the other uneven development.

“So, we will deal this issue with utmost care,” he said. “We will bring a special package to develop Telangana on par with other regions. Alongside, we will thoroughly examine the separate statehood issue. If people of Telangana feel that separation is only the solution, we won’t put up any hurdles.” Chiranjeevi added that the party’s policies on issues like Telangana and categorisation of scheduled castes would be revealed only in the election manifesto of the 2009 polls.

He, however, was not ready to reveal the names of the intellectuals with whom he had been holding discussions to formulate policies on these issues. When asked why his party had not evoked much response in Telangana despite his sympathetic stance towards the region, Chiranjeevi retorted: “The criteria is not whether seasoned politicians from other parties have joined. So many people from Telangana pledged their support to Praja Rajyam. Hordes of doctors, lawyers and other professionals have joined. What more do you want?”

He also rebuffed the charge that he had been admitting tainted people despite making proclamations against corruption, and emphasised that there was no place for such persons in his party. When reminded of the factionist past of Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy and the corruption allegations on the former IAS officer, Mr T. Chandrasekhar, Chiranjeevi said none of these charges had been proved. “We will not give Assembly tickets to corrupt babus, faction leaders and criminals if the charges against them are proved,” he said.

Chiranjeevi made light of the allegation that his party was dominated by his family. “If people accept them, my actor brothers may also take the political plunge in future as they also enjoy much popularity” he said. Regarding his producer brother-in-law, Mr Allu Aravind, the actor said that the former had been a facilitator between Praja Rajyam leaders and fans before the launch of the party. “Now his role is over,” said Chiranjeevi.

Chiru promises 80% tickets to freshers

Over 80 per cent of Prajarajyam members will be non-politicians and only 10-20 per cent of the partymen will be existing politicians and political workers. By implication then, 80 per cent of the tickets to be given by the party in the forthcoming elections will be to “freshmen”.

In an exclusive chat with TOI on Sunday morning —the first with any publication after the Tirupati meeting —party president Chiranjeevi said that he was seeking a paradigm shift in the politics of Andhra Pradesh and that is why his emphasis would be on fresh blood. “When I see legislators and leaders hurling abuses and heaping scorn on each other in the Assembly and outside I get disgusted. And in this I think I reflect the views of the majority of the denizens of AP,” Chiranjeevi said. “I do not want to conduct my political affairs in this fashion. I want to give respect to politics,” he added.

Chiranjeevi declared that his party is going to be a social justice party which will usher in a new order where the talented but downtrodden people who are “not getting a chance” in the existing scheme of things will be able to showcase their potential and realise them.” I have met thousands of people after my Tirupati meeting and they are displeased with the present scenario. Especially upset are the youth,” said Chiranjeevi. “These youth and the downtrodden people would be able to see a ‘ray of hope’ in Prajarajyam,” the megastar said, sitting across a round table at a small conference room in his party headquarters even as he nursed a bad cold. “I am impressed with the concept of gram swarajya and the aim of our party will be to create livelihood for people and stop this enmasse migration to the cities,” the Prajarajyam party president said. “We will certainly be pro-poor and these are not mere words. We will strive to reduce the gap between the poor and the rich and will work so that everyone has access to education and health,” he said.

The actor would embark on his much talked about “roadshow” pretty soon and this will be a yatra that will take him to all the three regions of the state. It is going to be a continuous yatra by road, with only some small breaks that might be required to address some urgent matters elsewhere, the neo-politician said.
Before that there would be a simultaneous “flag hoisting’ ceremony in each district of the state. “This will be a signal of solidarity of the cadres of the party across the state, a move that will bring in a sense of oneness and unity of purpose,” the actor said.

Large scale formal enrolment into the party will soon begin and aspirants would have to fill up a form for the purpose. The applications will have to be cleared by district committee of the party. This lengthy procedure is being introduced to keep track of the kind of people entering Prajarajyam. Party members would be of two kinds: permanent and active members. “The active members would be given tasks to do for the party,” Chiranjeevi said.

On the issue of alliances with like-minded political parties at the national level, Chiranjeevi said that no party had approached him for a tie-up. He seemed to indicate that he was yet to give serious thought to a pre-election national alliance. But he was willing to tie-up— post elections —with any secular party whose “ideas are close to our ideas.” He emphasized that Prajarajyam would strive to carry along all communities —Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

My commitment is to people: Chiru

Matinee idol Chiranjeevi is a voluble person by nature but uncommunicative in elaborating his philosophy and agenda of his party, the Praja Rajyam. Emerging from the shell, he bared his mind in an hour-long interview to The Hindu in the board room of his corporate-style office in Jubilee Hills here.

He spoke with passion of his mission to bridge the rich-poor divide, organisational issues, his caste, political alliances and the way forward. His mantra for Telangana and other thorny issues is to go to the masses ‘to feel and get charged’ before declaring his stand. Excerpts:

Q: When will you announce your agenda? You are being criticised for dilly-dallying.

A: There is a process for translating my thoughts into an ‘implementable agenda’. Vested interests are impatient about the delay but people are not. A feature film requires months of script writing, shooting and post-production whereas this is a lifetime picture. NTR did his homework in Madras before announcing his political agenda.

Right now, I can only voice my concerns about the widening rich-poor gap. I respect the present welfare and development schemes but I am more worried about reaching the benefits to the last man, which is not happening now in education, health and housing.

A scheme like Arogyasri is of limited utility as it does not help tribals in Adilabad and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh who are dying of viral fevers. Likewise, Government schools are being shut down on the pretext of poor enrolment. I will not detail these issues now, not because I don’t have answers.

Q: How different is your economic model from that of the Congress, the TDP or the Left?

A: I will not do different things but only the same things differently as the benefits of Government programmes should reach the grassroot level. Corruption is the biggest problem as it is rampant. I will not claim that I will eradicate it. I will only control it, starting from the top.

Q: The Left is not averse to aligning with you but they know little about your ideology.

A: I am not going to align with anyone right now. It is premature. Let me hit the road first. I know my strengths. We will align on the basis of mutual compatibility.

Q: How do you expect to fight the Congress and the Telugu Desam without a party network.

A: Everything cannot be put in place overnight. I already have a network of fans and I only have to streamline the organisation. My party will evolve in a couple of months.

Q: The Praja Rajyam has been dubbed as ‘party of migrants’ and criticised for admitting factionists and persons facing corruption charges.

A: I cannot turn away people. Many have joined because they were feeling uncomfortable in their parties. I will consider quality and freshness while entrusting organisational responsibilities. The charges against those whom you are referring to have not been proved. I too have been accused of kidnapping a girl. Those with faction background see the Praja Rajyam as a platform to break away from the past.

Q: Praja Rajyam is being associated with a particular caste. What do you have to say?

A: This is to be expected. I naturally belong to the caste of my parents and I can’t help it. Although many were sceptical about my prospects in the film industry, I made it to the top because I was caste-neutral. Nobody can confine me to a particular caste, although newspapers are trying to do so. I realise this is more pronounced in East and West Godavari but people of all castes are confident that I can render social justice.

Q: Your party is seen as being strong only in coastal Andhra.

A: No, we are gaining strength in all the regions. It is like a volcano ready to erupt in Telangana and Rayalaseema. The TRS president himself admitted that my stand on Telgangana is a step ahead of the others. But, I will go to the people to know how many want a separate State and what else they want.

Q: How many seats do you expect to win in the Assembly elections?

A: I am confident of winning a majority of the (294) seats.

Chiru fans feel short-changed

Chiranjeevi’s fans who hyped his film releases and spreaheaded his blood donation drives are a sore lot today. They see themselves being sidelined by Chiranjeevi in his new avatar as politician. In every district, Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam is pitting politicians who joined the party recently ahead of die-hard supporters of the star. In Anantapur district, the fans association leader, Mr Surendra Babu, is reportedly unhappy with the growing importance Mr J. Suryanarayana, who recently joined from the Telugu Desam.

In Visakhapatnam, the fief of Mr Raghava Rao, it is the former TD legislator, Mr Rehman, who is calling the shots. In Warangal district, Mr K. Prabhakar has been passed over for Mr E. Pradeep Rao, brother of the TD leader Mr E. Dayakar Rao. In Nalgonda district, the fans association president, Mr B. Venkanna Goud, is now eclipsed by Mr J. Sudhaker Rao who is claiming that he is a close relative of Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law, Mr Allu Aravind. The Guntur district fans association president, Mr S. Satish Kumar, gave vent to his anger at being sidelined.

Mr Kumar has seen new entrants like K. Rosaiah, son-in-law of the TD leader, Mr U. Venkateshwarlu, and other leaders who crossed-over from the TD. When contacted Mr Kumar said, “I am a die-hard fan of Chiranjeevi. I conducted many blood donation camps for the megastar. But some political leaders who recently pledged their support to PR are trying to dominate me in the district.” “I have faith in the party leadership, that they will give me an appropriate post in the party.”

“The Praja Rajyam leadership is treating fans as second class citizens and giving priority to political leaders who joined the party recently,” said a leader of the Chiranjeevi fans association from Prakasam district.

Chiru under attack from all sides

Megastar-turned-Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi might have thought he would enjoy good relationship with leaders of all political parties. But, he is already under attack from all sides.

While the Telugu Desam leaders have already launched virulent attack on him for poaching upon their important leaders and cadres into PRP, for the first time, Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy attacked Chiranjeevi from the dais of a public meeting at Anantapur. He said people should not get carried away by film stars, because politics is not acting. To serve people and understand their problems, one should be part of them and therefore, one cannot expect to become the Chief Minister overnight using his filmy image.

On the other hand, CPI-M State secretary B V Raghavulu also came down heavily on Chiranjeevi for encouraging defections from the Left parties. Those who were expelled from the party on the charges of criminal activities and corruption were also joining Chiranjeevi, who does not seem to have any control over who is coming into his party, Raghavulu said.

Bharatiya Janata Party and even TRS are also critical of the style of functioning of Chiranjeevi. As PCC president D Srinivas said the take off of PRP is not perfect.

Praja Rajyam’s plea for security turned down

A request by Praja Rajyam for providing two dedicated teams of police personnel to travel in the convoy of its president Chiranjeevi when he takes up his ‘yatra’ by the end of the month has been turned down by the government.

Praja Rajyam had sought the services of two teams of 30 policemen each, including an inspector and two SIs, to travel with Mr. Chiranjeevi and provide proximate security.

Also, the party had asked for local police to clear traffic ahead of the convoy and ensure enough uniformed presence to maintain law and order. Declining the request, the government informed Praja Rajyam that depending upon the local situation and the size of the gathering at a particular place along the route, it would ask Superintendents of Police in the districts to ensure enough uniformed cover.

Private security

“We are bound to have provide enough security as we do for other political leaders because we have to prevent any untoward incident. Did we not post over 1,500 police personnel in Mr. Chiranjeevi’s public meeting in Tirupati?”, a senior police official asked. The government’s refusal has made Praja Rajyam look at security issues afresh. It has hired over 400 private security guards to travel with the actor. The party’s security managers, however, fear that these security guards may not be able to control overzealous fans eager for a glimpse of the ‘megastar’ as effectively as the police force. Mr. Chiranjeevi’s younger brother Pawan Kalyan is already taking care of the personal security with the help of the guards. They are being trained to recognise people who matter and those who do not, with a specific focus on learning from the mistakes committed at the ‘Praja Ankita Vedika’ at Tirupati on August 26 where several important leaders were not allowed anywhere close to the dais.

Chiranjeevi Road Show

Chiru is planning a mega Road show from September 26th. Discussions are going on with core team members and recently joined politicians to decide where to start. Majority of core team members favored to start from Telangana state to gain some popularity in Telangana where Praja Rajyam party is weak compared to Andhra and Rayalaseema. Chiru is planning to stay around 10-15 days in every 3 districts making it as a segment.

Political circles are also much waiting for this Road show to see what response Chiru is going to get in these Road shows.

T Chandrashekar jumps from frying pan into political fire

As a firebrand official, he was known for taking on politicians. However, having quit a government job, T Chandrashekar has joined the very people he loved to hate.

The former feisty Maharashtra bureaucrat has taken the plunge into active politics by joining Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s nascent political outfit Praja Rajyam.

Mr Chandrashekhar, one of the most decorated IAS officers (1987 batch) of the state, had quit as MHADA chief in January this year after a tiff with the state administration. He went on long leave after chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh tried to persuade him to stay on. After being in near-exile for over eight months, Mr Chandrashekhar on Thursday emerged at a function in Hyderabad to announce his entry into politics.

“I join hands with Chiranjeevi in ushering the much-needed change in politics. Now, I want to work for social justice,” he told in the no-holds-barred style he is known for.

To an outsider, it may appear ironic that he is entering an arena he hated the most as a government official, but Mr Chandrashekhar doesn’t think so. “What’s the big deal? I will now serve people from the other side of the table. As a former bureaucrat, it’s not much of a change. I will continue to do what I was doing but from the other side,” he thinks.

Asked how it feels to be a politician, he says: “As an official, my job was to deliver to the people. As a politician, I will continue to be a part of the delivery mechanism.” But why politics? “Because as a bureaucrat one faces a lot of hurdles while serving the people. Politics gives you the necessary freedom in this endeavour. I have shown what a government official can achieve. Now, I want to show what a bureaucrat-turned-politician can achieve,” he said.

Will he be contesting an election? “See, no one joins politics for charitable work. It’s too early to say what I will be doing (as a politician). But it’s not difficult to guess.”

Asked about his decision to join an untested party formed not even a month ago, he said, “I was drawn towards Chiranjeevi as he is genuinely committed to the welfare and empowerement of the downtrodden. His selfless service, commitment and ideals will stand him in good stead.” His party, as of now may, be confined to Andhra Pradesh. Though he refused to specify what role he would play, he made it clear that he is looking for a “wider platform”.

And just a few hours into the role, Mr Chandrashekhar is already sounding like a seasoned politician. “Ours is a party with a difference,” he claimed.

Management Strategy In Chiru Party

There are now management gurus in Chiranjeevi's party apart from politicians. Right now there is lull in Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam and many from opposition parties and journalists are saying that the so-called hype has gone and nothing is left with Praja Rajyam and the balloon was already burst.

The analysts say that the hype that was there when NTR started TDP is not seen now with Praja Rajyam. But the management gurus in Chiranjeevi's party say that this lull is only a strategy.

When people go down with low expectations and suddenly if they see any big surge, they will be carried away easily. Hence it seems that Praja Rajyam camp is intentionally keeping the expectations of the people down. It shows its might only at right time it seems.

Delay likely in Chiranjeevi’s yatra

The proposed yatra of Praja Rajyam (PR) president and film star Chiranjeevi is likely to be put off by a few weeks.

While it was expected that the PR president will commence his mass contact programme, spanning about three months, on September 17, party insiders say that the yatra will now commence either on September 26 or October 8.

They attribute this to the delay in constituting organisational committees at different levels to oversee the arrangements for the tour.

Mr. Chiranjeevi announced on Wednesday that the committees would be put in place in two to three more weeks and added “I wish I could visit each and every household”.

The film star-turned-politician rebuffed the criticism that he lacked clarity on key issues confronting the people.

“I may not be a politician, but I have a clear perspective of the issues.” He announced that the party’s manifesto which would be released shortly would incorporate all the issues and solutions aimed at providing quality life to people.

Welcoming leaders from others parties joining PR, he said the migration of leaders and activists reflected the “dissatisfaction” prevailing among the people.

“I entered politics on the invitation of the people who will decide in what way I can serve them best.”

Meanwhile, PR spokesman P. Mitra took objection to media reports claiming that there were “no people” in PR, stating it would take some time for the party to set up the organisational machinery in tune with the people’s aspirations.

“It is only a two-week-old party,” he said, addressing leaders of different political parties from Guntur district who joined PR on Wednesday.

Scribes’ walkout:

Interestingly, Dr. Mitra’s recorded speech was replayed to the journalists as they could not enter the party office in Jubilee Hills in spite of prior invitation.

The seats meant for journalists were occupied by enthusiastic activists and the organisers failed to vacate them even after some scribes managed to enter.

This led to the reporters’ staging a walkout from the venue.

I have clarity on Social Problems, says Megastar Chiranjeevi

Mr. Chiranjeevi, founder of Praja Rajyam Party says that people of the state have invited him into politics in order to solve the problems faced by them. He says people of the state have given a call to him to reflect their dissatisfaction that they are having towards the present government. He opined that proper justice is not being done to people currently. He stated that the call given by the people should not go waste. He pumped enthusiasm into the party workers by stating that a day will come in the near future were all the disparities existing between various sections of the society will be eradicated and better living conditions will emerge for all sections of people in the state. On Wednesday while addressing fans and party workers at Image Gardens in Madhapur, Hyderabad he provided a strong reply to the criticism made by some political parties. He says he has clarity of what to do in the party and how to do the things. He expressed that the people of the state are his employers and in the process saluted them. He says there will be all round development of the state and that day is very near. To make this happen he says people have given him assurance. He says it appears like a ‘public roar’ after seeing the people who are turning up voluntarily to join the party.

“I will provide all the inspiration and motivation required for people to develop”-Mr. Chiranjeevi: “I have got enough and I am satisfied with it ….. I am coming only to fulfill your aspirations. By making efforts to fulfill them, I will be able to discover myself,” said PRP founder megastar Chiranjeevi. He took oath stating that he will extend all his support and motivation to create bright future and to help people in getting their aspirations fulfilled.

“I will visit every house in the state”- Mr. Chiranjeevi: He says that within few weeks he will take up statewide tour during which he will visit every house in the state. He says by servicing the people of the state his lifetime desire will get fulfilled.

Ex TDP MLA J.Nehru joined Chiru Party

Nellore Mayor Sailaja Reddy, who resigned from Congress joined Praja Rajyam Party on Wednesday in the presence of film star and party’s founder Chiranjeevi. Former TDP President of East Godavari District and Ex.MLA Jyotula Nehru, former Vinukonda MLA V Yellamanda Rao from Guntur district, also from TDP and former IAS officer from Maharashtra cadre T Chadnrasekhar hails from Guntur district also joined the new party.
Revolting against powerful Anam brothers, close associates of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhera Reddy in Nellore district, Sailaja alleged that there was no protection and respect to women in Congress party. She had been at loggerheads with Anam brothers – Information Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and his brother and Congress MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy. She has been keeping off the party activities for some time now before finally calling it quits on Wednesday. Welcoming her to the party fold, Chiranjeevi said her entry into Praja Rajyam vindicated the importance that the party was according to women. Dr. Chandrasekhar, a 1987 batch officer, worked various positions in Maharashtra and was a recipient of several awards including the Prime Minister’s medal for the best civil servant. Several leaders of the TDP from Nellore, Guntur, Kadapa and other districts also joined the Praja Rajyam Party.

Can Sonia neutralise Chiranjeevi's glitter?

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajashekhar Reddy is a worried man these days. Will the emergence of superstar Chiranjeevi as a political leader threaten YSR’s prospects of a second term? The answer seems to be 10, Janpath.

The state is schedule to go to polls in April 2009 simultaneously with the general elections. And Reddy, sources said, wants Congress president Sonia Gandhi to tour all the 23 districts before that.

Sonia is also stated to be keen on Andhra Pradesh, which sent 31 of the Congress’ 153 members in the Lok Sabha. Andhra has 42 Lok Sabha seats. The party is now looking at improving its tally.

The Congress chief will begin her tour of the state on Thursday, covering three districts — Chittoor, Kadapa and Anantpur. While she will address women’s groups in Tirupati, there will be a rally in Anantpur and project inauguration in Kadapa, Reddy’s home turf.

Sonia has already toured two districts — Nellore and Prakasam — in July, just before the trust vote in Parliament. It was in Nellore where she launched a public attack on the Left and the Opposition and took the nuclear deal to the people.

Though Reddy claims that the Congress will get around 230 of the 294 seats in the assembly, the massive support that Chiranjeevi and his party — the Praja Rajyam — have generated across the state is a matter of concern.

“Chiranjeevi is certainly a superstar with charisma and commands good following in the state,” a senior Congress leader admitted to the Hindustan Times.

Now the party is relying on Sonia’s crowd-pulling capacity. “She is a unifying force and people identify her as one committed to the service of the people,” former APCC chief Keshava Rao said.

The state Congress has been attacking Chiranjeevi from some time, in some cases even making personal attacks — his daughter’s marriage, his brother’s family life and irregularities at the blood and eye banks run by him.

“Chiranjeevi may be popular but does not have a political ideology of his own. He was not able to convince people as what his approach will be,” Vundavalli Arun Kumar, senior party MP and permanent invitee to CWC, said.

Such is the sensation created by Chiranjeevi’s party that the Congress, which earlier said the Telugu Desam Party remained its main rival, is now stating that it has to be seen as who will be its prime target in the elections.

Tadepalligudem Chiru fans Gift
