Amar Singh seeks post-poll mega booster for SP & allies

The meeting between Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh and Praja Rajyam founder Chiranjeevi appears to be an exercise in public relations on the former’s part to keep a channel of communication open so as to explore the possibility of a tie-up with the star after the Lok Sabha elections.

The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, was also attended by Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan and Lok Sabha member Jaya Prada at Chiru’s party office this evening but nothing concrete had been discussed either in the context of State or national politics.

The essence of Amar’s mission seems to be to prevent the PRP from aligning with any party, including the BJP, immediately as it would continue even in the post-poll scenario. The SP’s calculation is that Praja Rajyam will be useful in future in case of a fractured mandate. However, speaking to reporters, Amar Singh said there was nothing ‘political’ in their meeting. "It’s a goodwill visit," he said. Chiranjeevi and Amitabh Bachchan are family friends. Amitabh, who is in London, saw the footage of Chiru’s maiden public meeting in Tirupati and asked his wife Jaya to meet Chiranjeevi, the SP leader explained.

During the conversation, Jaya complimented Chiranjeevi for the ‘‘amazing response to the Tirupati meeting." Amar Singh said there was a dearth of leadership especially in politics and felt good people like Chiru need to enter politics.

Nonetheless, he cautioned Chiranjeevi that politics was not a ‘bed of roses’ and the path was very difficult. Asked whether their relation with Chiru would continue in future, Amar Singh quipped: "It is an internal matter."
